We are not just talking about YOUR safety here,it is for the safety of other road users. A RHD (van) with side windows used to pass the test but the law changed & a RHD van with or without side windows will not now pass the test. I do'nt know if this would affect a RHD motorhome but as yours is LHD ....................see my last post. Tuk-tuk.

Why would you think that? This is about safety, crash testing and a "safety cell". The basic idea is that in a crash your "personal space / safety cell" will not be invaded and you will be able to walk away.
Motorhome manufacturers take an engine with sub chassis and build from scratch. They do not mass produce to the same extent as cars (which go through extensive tests). As each vehicle is built differently then each vehicle has to be theoretically "crash tested" to ensure european citizens can not harm themselves!

But as many motorhomes are made in the EU to EU standards then they should come up to UK standards. My last Motorhome was a Rapido ... French. You'd think the same rules would apply as they do to European cars

Hi

We are in danger of going off thread. However, the homologation is about making sure it confirms to the laws of Spain; as an aside, British laws on conformity as less strict than other European countries. Because it is LHD does not mean it complies with SPANISH laws, which are different even though it is within the EU. For auguments sake, on a caravan, the number plate had to be changed from the bottom in the middle, to much higher up (about a metre high instead of 25 cms). Such are different laws on conformity.
However if the manufacturer can supply a certificate of European conformity, then member states have to accept it as proof.
The problem with vans / lorries, is "the load line". It is legal to load the vehicle to above the windows therefore restricting the view, therefore the Spanish decided not to accept RHD vehicle; other countries are free to accept or not as they please.
The conformity laws have also a degree of protectionism in them; if the radio is made outside the EU and has not been proved to conform to EU standards, then it is possible to reject the vehicle.

I think I need a stiff drink and a university degree to absorb all this lot
the figures being bandied about are quite scary but does that 1400e figure include having Spanish plates and ITV and whatever else you need when first changing from UK to Spanish plates? I'm beginning to feel a bit thick :(

Can't find anything that looks like "Certificate of European Conformity" in German  I've sent off an email to Hymer so now have everything crossed that I get some positive response otherwise not sure what we'll do as we thought buying a small lhd campervan well in advance of our move would simplify all the paperwork and expense when we got to Spain ... I'm beginning to understand why there seem to be so many expats sticking with their UK plates

As it is LHD then you should have no problems, as long as it hasn't been modified.

Hi

Being LHD has no bearing. One has to PROVE it conforms to SPANISH laws, not German, Italian or wherever else it could have been made. A certifiacte of European Conformity from the manufacturer is sufficient proof.

The 1400€ is for the Certificate of conformity only, add 500 ish euros for NIE, Volante de empadronamiento, Baja de residencia, Road tax, Trafico fee. One item I can't remember is whether the certificate test will give the same as the ITV test, if not add 120 euros !!!

Also the headlights may have to be changed if it is on English plates. The light pattern where it hits the road must hilight the verge, not the white line.
I normally suggest prices start around 350€ a pair, BMW halogen lights are I believe 1,000€ each but this maybe a rumour price.

Re: motorhome rematriculation

I have now tracked down some info from Hymer regards to my van. Vehicles before 2000 won't have the necessary certificate but they can give me a set of technical spec sheets (in German :() for about £150. Now, I don't mind paying that as long as it will help my cause with Spanish matriculation. Can anyone help as we're leaving on Friday to drive down to Spain and I think I then only have a month for registration to Spanish plates?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jnk,

I don't believe that it will help UNLESS you can identify the words "Certificate of European Conformity".

I believe that there are programs on the internet that translate, but do you know anyone locally. If it includes the words, then I THINK (as I have not tested the latest regs - I can not be sure) an Official translation signed by the German embassy can be accepted.
As an aside, our Hacienda (tax office) give us 60 days to rematriculate.

I honestly believe that your best bet would be to "bite the bullet", and before you become resident (90 or 180 days depending upon who you believe) return it to England and sell it.
Sorry but the laws are new, and whilst I can surmise from experiences, the only real test is at your expense and that is very expensive.
I don't think anyone will have experience under these new rules but if there is anyone out there, I will bow to their greater experience.
