Hello again! My last question of the day! :rolleyes:

I have been looking over pages of old threads, and have only found two questions regarding mosquitoes and how to cope with them. I am one of those people that come up in huge hot lumps when bitten, so I am hoping that I can find some way of reducing my reaction to them. One of the posts I read suggested vitamin B1, another growing Basil plants near and in the house. I shall certainly try both of these, and wondered if anyone can advise me further, favourite remedies, things that work for them etc. Also is there anyone living in Alhaurin El Grande who could tell me if they know of a particular problem in that area. I would be very grateful for advice.

Hi Brenda,

I too suffer with dreadful reactions to mozzie bites,they come up the size of dinner plates & i'm not joking!! The only thing that works for me is very strong anti-histamines.The last time i got bitten i had to go to the local clinic for an injection. :scared:
Nothing you do can stop the little bleeders coming into the house,they always manage to find a way!!!! :)

Like you, I get horrible big lumps from them. I found the perfect solution, I bought a tiny bottle of citronella from boots chemist (you have to ask for it as it's behind counter) and I just dab a tiny amount on wrists and ankles (and I mean, the tiniest amount)when needed, quite a strong smell but really works. If you are already in Spain I'm sure a family member could get some for you.

I just like you get lots of horrible bites.
Mozzies only like sweet blood, so anything with a yeast flavour is a deterrent.
Tried and tested is Marmite, yes I know it is horrible but it does work.
I have a spoonful of Marmite in a glass of boiling water every morning, and it does work.
Even the Mozzies hate the taste , can't say I blame them!
Worth a try what have you got to lose!

Thanks so much for that. :) I actually like marmite, so it's music to my ears. Plenty of other ideas as well. I'll have to sleep with cotton wool in my ears too, I can't stand that high pitched whine, find it quite painful. Thanks again. Maybe see you around sometime. I'll be the one that smells of citronella and marmite. Could become a fashion statement :D

You could just fit mosquito screens to you windows. I paid about 50 euros per window including fitting. It doesn´t protect you whilst you are out and about, but at least you can sleep easy at night and not wake up with bites all over you.

That's a very good idea. Not too expensive either.

I agree Citronella does also work.
Stay clear of stagnant water,as this is one of their main breeding grounds.
You just never know this fashion might just catch on.
You either love Marmite or hate it, actually I have become used to it now and it is not that bad, worth it for what it achieves. :eek:

In Canada and the US they use sprays that contain "Deet", which is very effective. I am not sure whether it is available in Spain though.

I use Avon 'Skin so Soft' dry body oil. It smells really nice and works a treat, they don't touch me now.

Hi Brenda,Citronella is good ,also Citronella candles placed on your patio,light them and the smell will keep the mossies away. A lot of people over here use the Fabric Softener Sheets that you place in your dryer when you are drying your washing.Just rub them on your wrists and neck and keep one in your pocket.

Yes, citronella candles, Avon "Skin so Soft", and lots of garlic in your diet too!
Those plug-in thingies worked wonders indoors for us as well.
Just try to keep windows and doors closed as the sun sets too.
I was eaten alive for a couple of weeks... including a particularly nasty one on my eyelid. But some really helpful people in another forum gave me the advice I needed... and now I'm left well alone. No bites now for about 6 weeks!

My partner all of a sudden developed a nasty reaction to mozzie bites - massive swelling etc.....anyway he now takes a daily antihistamine - no problems anymore

Hi,
Are these mossies an all year round problem?

My elder daughter she has very bad reactions also and is a bit worried about the problem.

She normally only get's bit on the legs, However the poor girl ends up having to wear trousers all the time. :)

I was going to say there was an Avon product that apparently works, although it isn't something that Avon claim, just a useful extra thing you get. But I couldn't remember the name, so hoped someone would post it again. We have a number of Avon reps round here on the CB.
