A hot poultice will kill the itch if you do get bitten. Seriously, it really does work.

A devious trick is to provide Mosquitoes with breeding sites. Have a series of jars around the garden in pairs, one empty and dry, the other half full of water. Every week, empty the half full one into the dry one thru a teastrainer and leave the wet one to dry. Throw the larvae onto the soil to die.

I read in one of those guides like "A thousand uses for ordinary items" that for bites and stings you can immediately dab on WD40.

The wasps at this time of year can be aggressive and it is the only time of year I seem to get bit and it is very painful.

Tried the WD40 last year and it works. It controls the swelling, itch and there is no pain. Similar result for a bite but am not sure if it was a mosquito or a fruit fly.

If you have fruit flies that bite you, then things are worse than we ever thought!

Does it matter which fragrance skin so soft you use as there seems to be a choice or does it all work and just go with the version you prefer?

We have always used the blue/green coloured one "woodland fresh" and water down the moisturising bath oil. I dont know if other fragrances work as I have stayed with what I know works! Used for 15 yrs in the carribean and 13 years in Spain.

Having tried all sorts, we finally went to the Chinese. They sell little jars full of pleasant smelling gel, which last for a few weeks when you leave them open.

We leave them at doors and windows, and other likely places, and it keeps the mozzies away.

Our villa is on the side of a hill, and there is usually a bit of a breeze! That, combined with the fact that we allow the house-martins to nest under our eves, seems to keep the mosquito population down to a minimum!

I have been bitten in Spain whilst eating out in town, and also on a regular basis in the UK, so I think the birds have something to do with it!

In answer to the original question, Yes, you do seem to get less sensitive to the bites over time. The first bite event of the year is always the worst. Then if you get bitten again, the first one flares up again! I used to suffer really badly!
Make sure you buy somewhere away from lots of slow flowing or standing water
Keep any lawns or vegetation short. Have Mozzie nets on your windows and doors, a really good mozzie net on your bed (I made one out of 2 to have a really good overlap on both sides of the bed) and a pack of antihistamine tablets and some antihistamine cream to hand if all else fails.
I agree with the other posters about creams ETC. A shower, and rigorous application of creams or cologne (the locals use agua de colonia) at bedtime seems to make a lot of difference. If you get up for a wee in the night re-apply
I have a water spray and use watered down cologne. esp round my ankles.
We also have those little purple mozzie /fly killing lights on in the bedroom and bathroom. With all these in place this last year I was hardly bothered at all!

We own a shop in Spain, we used to sell these gels, but can no longer buy them because they have been banned, do not know why as they were amazing and have tried everywhere to buy them since, but none to be found!!

We sell loads of the Avon SSS but the dry oil spray (previously mentioned) is the one to get and make sure if you are going out for the evening (or day for that matter) that you cover everywhere, it really does work. Another thing that works are the (annoying for some people) keyrings that I personally keep by the bed and one permanently attached to me from sign of first bite until end of season (probably October) they remit a sound that the biting mosquito keeps away from.

hope this all helps

I haven't come across these, I presume you mean a sound inaudible to humans?

Can these be bought in the UK or only on the continent and where do I get some from please? Has anyone else used them and found them to be effective?

We sell them in our shop but I do not think I can advertise on this site, so cannot really say more than that, if you wish to contact me I dont know how that works either. I was in Hospital in the UK from getting a very rare skin complaint from the Mosquito bites, it was horrendous, still left with the scars and that was in 1982!! I was prescribed Sun and given a machine much like these keyrings and it worked. As I mentioned I keep one permanently by my bed and one with me all the time, it is a falisy that they only bite at night! If there are 1000 people in a room and one mosquito it will find me, these are brilliant I personally can highly recommend, there is only one draw back the noise, you dont hear it after a while and if you could to me it is better to hear the noise than cope with the bites, depends what your priorities are. Loads of people swear by them. Some work some dont, I can only speak from experience.
