More Spanish farmers ditching Olives....

Re: More Spanish farmers ditching Olives....
No it wouldn't. China did it, but then they could because they're a dictatorship.
As Gandhi said:
"on earth there are enough resources for all, but not for the greed of a few. It's greed that engenders poverty."

That's because the system is outdated and the idea was that you always need more people for everything. When we look at the climate crisis, food crisis and housing crisis the point of a pension is gone when it doesn't even cover the rent and basic living costs.

That's a bit outdated too. Even without greed, the people who don't see themselves as greedy wouldn't give up on what they have. If somebody would ask you to give up your house and live in a small cube so more could be grown, you and I probably wouldn't do it. In reality we will just continue as is and hope for the best.

They already have desalination plants, they're probably going to need more. And the energy to run them...

We have huge Orange farms in our area, also lemon trees abound.
But I haven't seen any Lime trees. I'm purely guessing that they are in the same 'family' and therefore growing conditions in Spain should be ok.
Is there any reason (maybe commercial) that limes aren't widespread as well?

Quick question from someone who has no 'green in his finger' !!

As more people in the world become better off, they reduce their number of children, eat more meat and desire the style that we have become accustomed to.
You are correct in saying that nobody wants to give up what one has achieved as a living standard.
However, things have to change. About 1/3 food produced is wasted either through poor storage facilities, thrown away by supermarkets because of the sell-by date or else by households.

It's a huge problem, but I think Gandhi still got it right. Whilst we in the comfortable West are relatively well off, it is at the expense of the poorer world. Primark, Apple, Zara to name only 3 companies, source their products from Asia, because of cheap labour. What if those companies sourced their production from the West? Would consumers buy at the predictable higher prices?

Re: More Spanish farmers ditching Olives....
One of our local farmers who last year replaced all the olives, oranges and nispero trees on his land was complaining because the agriculture water supplied is being cut to two days on and three off in our area.
He isn't happy because all his nice expensive Avocado trees are dropping their fruit as he cannot irrigate as much as he likes.
I only caught some of the conversation but from what was said to me, none of the other farmers gave him much sympathy.
He stormed off and they all burst out laughing..

They are being grown in Spain, apparently, and increasingly so.

its good to know that limes are being grown in Spain, I haven't personally seen them anywhere.
This could be one area where farmers can diversify.... And..... Feed my love of my favourite cocktail ... MARGARITA (on the rocks not frozen!) with salt on the rim. I put salt on 2/3rds of the rim, so non salt lovers can drink it too
Thanks again
