We will also need an independent lawyer.

There are plenty of agents in that area that have been around for a good few years so they must be doing something right, the agent of course is at the end of the day working for the seller so your lawyer is probably more important

My agent and lawyer did exactly what they were required to do but that's all the experience I have. Mine are in Javea.

I take it that was stated tongue in cheek. I have purchased two properties in Spain without problems. Of course there are some rogues around but providing you are careful who you choose you should have no trouble. (Mitzyboy did warn me off of one estate agent)
The solicitor I used for both purchases still retains PoA over my bank account and has done so for around 8 years. I would not allow that if I didn't trust him.

If home is the UK you would also struggle to fine any there I would suggest , as has been said it is entirely possible to buy in Spain and not be caught up in loads of problems.
