Default Microsoft Office - Trial Period Expired

I bought the laptop last year and had it put in to English. Today I went in to my documents and was told that my trial period had expired. I didn´t even know I had a trial period. Now I can´t access any of my documents. HELP!

You don`t think tight mr Microsoft would give you an 800 quid program for free do you ?

Download Openoffice (free and almost as good), you should be able to access your MS docs through that.
Make sure you havent got any more trials running, it should say "you only have so many days or whatever of your trial left" before they cut you off.

It may be you have an older version of OpenOffice, and so don't have the filters to see/read newer microsoft documents eg word files with suffix .docx
Can you send emails to yourself, and attach files you need to see? In Google mail (and many others) you can then view your documents online - giving you the option to copy and paste back to an OpenOffice program.
Or copy your files onto a memory stick or external drive, and find a friendly neighbour with Office, who will copy and save back as rtf (word docs) or csv (for spreadsheet) files.

Good luck with whichever option you choose - it's going to be hard, dreary work unfortunately.
When you've your files back, think about keeping back-ups online with a free service like Dropbox. Top 5 are listed here:

I have now found the documents and have been able to open them with OpenOffice. Thank God and you guys.

I couldn´t open a PDF document so tried Foxit and that opened okay. The wierd thing was that when I did this I found a copy of a car hire excess policy that I took out in December in my husband´s name as he was driving then and that I had completely forgotten about. As I am hiring a car next week in the UK I am now trying to get my name added to the policy. But I digress.

When I now want to save a document how can I get it automatically to be saved in Open Office, i.e. my boarding card.

Another simple solution is to download the Microsoft Word Viewer.

You've found the solution, and there are many, but I would still recommend Microsoft Office, you can get the cheap, student version from Amazon.co.uk for around £80. OpenOffice and all the other free ones are almost as good, but not quite, the professionals still use Microsoft, it's the best.

Yes I would recommend it too, I bought the Student/Teacher version from Amazon for £80.
In addition I also bought Publisher which now gives me everything I need for being creative without having to buy lots of other programs, I've got access to lots of on-line templates and add-ons for free from within both.

When I bought my new PC a couple of months ago the first thing I did was to remove all of the Trial Ware, in the past I've found that they can cause problems if you then later try to install the full and paid for versions.

Some manufacturers are now shipping PCs loaded with Office 2010 Starter Edition.

This is a reduced function version of Word and Excel with some adverts. Frankly it meets the needs of most Office users (who rarely use more than about 10% of the full function set anyway).

It is not a trial version so you can use it for as long as you like. If you want to release the full function and remove the ads you purchase a product key just as you now do for the trial versions that we have been discussing on this thread.

At least this way you know what you are getting and don't have the problems when it expires.
