Medication costs Lanzarote

Hello Forum,

I've been searching Google trying to solve my own problem but with no success. Can anyone advise how Spanish medication costs compare to the UK? I am not asking about the Spanish health service in the widest sense but about the cost of prescribed medication payable at the farmacia. I have an eclectic mix of meds but can't see how much each item may cost me. best wishes

Surely that will depend on the medication. In the UK there is a fixed prescription charge, in Spain not so, and you pay a % of the cost, assuming you are not a pensioner.

When I first moved to the Canary Islands, I went to the Chemist with a list of drugs that I needed and priced them, all were cheaper than the prices in the U.K. chemist. I'm not talking about prescription charges that you have on the Iberian peninsular, but over the counter prices here in the Canary Islands.

That may well be the case for common drugs, but some drugs that are prescribed in the UK cost several hundreds of pounds a prescription, but you only pay the NHS price.

Thank you for the comments. I guess I'm looking for some price comparisions but not sure where I can find those. There is nothing on line. I may have to pay a translator to make the calls for me to a famacia.

No not the case at all, drugs prescribed in the U.K., and fully priced in the chemist in the U.K., later priced in the Canary Islands chemist. They were cheaper in the Canary Islands

Just made a quick call to a pharmacy in Lanzarote and spoke to a helpful English speaking pharmacist. My immediate impression is that the items are much cheaper than prescription prices in the UK. I'm relieved.
