Medical Service/Insurance in Spain
I am new to blogging and forums - but have just posted the following under a Portugal thread. I am doing a lot of research on moving to live in Spain or Portugal, but have been unable to get sufficient information about the medical service provided to OAPs, I am very fit and well but am on medication for the usual old-age conditions, high blood pressure and chlorestrol, so will need regular prescriptions for tablets. What I need to know is will I have to pay for this medication and what are the costs likely to be. Also will I have a better service if I pay for medical insurance, that is if I can get it at a reasonable cost as a 70 year old?
Any advice anyone can give me would be very welcome.

OAP´s get free prescriptions. The doctor that you register with may change the medication that you are on as some are not available in the same strengths here but it will get sorted out.

Statins are available over the counter from €2 a box, but of course you will be able to get a prescription from your doctor so you'll get them free
You'll get the same cover as a Spanish national here. I'm guessing private health care is going to be quite expensive for you

The Spanish health service is better than the UK - the usual language problem sometimes make it seem difficult but translators are cheaper than insurance!
