Talking Medical costs

Hi again
We are moving to Spain in August but I am only 54. I am worried about how much the dentist, optician or doctor might cost me in Spain.
I know after a few years I will be eligible for free medical appointments.
Can anyone tell me how much it might cost me in the meantime?

Dentist and optician are pretty much equivalent to UK prices. Doctor will cost you per visit, if you are not ill that will cost you nada. There are several threads about social security costs. I would advise you to read them.

Lol! I won't be able to afford to go to the dentist or optician then!
Thanks Missile, I will look for them!
I have RA, so the trips to the doctors might end up expensive too then.
Can you get a medical insurance such as Bupa to cover when out in Spain?

You admit to 54, how old is the other half ? this is important.

Medical insurance is widely available and cheaper than in the UK.

Yes, you can get BUPA, or equivalent e.g. ALC, Sanitas and Cigna. However with an existing condition you may find it prohibitively expensive. Go online for a quote.

Please be advised, neither of you will qualify for free health care, any time soon.

I had guessed that which is why I was asking my question.
Can you recommend any particular health insurance?

My tip re health insurance is first drop by your local private medical practice and ask which companies they deal with and ask their advice, otherwise you could find yourselves signed up to a health insurance company whose nearest available doctor is miles away.

In my experience if you see a doctor privately without insurance the consultation fee is around 50-60 euros. I have found that dentists charge far less than private ones in the UK.

On dentistry, having had experience of both, I can assure you if you find the right dentist in Spain their prices are nothing like the UK.

Checkup and a filling here in the UK just cost £120. In Spain I would get a filling for €40 and a clean for €30 at a good dentist in Oliva, CB North.

Dentistry in the UK is ridiculously expensive if you cant find an NHS dentist

As always, I'm sure it varies place to place

Hi thanks Mitzyboy and big wheels, I am much reassured! The dentist, even the NHS is very expensive over here which is why I don't go unless I am absolutely desperate, which by then means a big bill!

Is there any expat on this forum who lives near Allbox or Arboleas and can recommend a doctor or dentist?
Thanks

As has already been mentioned private medical cover is readily available and cheaper than the UK. Although there will be exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Here in Andalucia, and I believe other regions also if you don't qualify for the NHS, and I'm not sure what the rules are now as we got onto it a few years ago and we aren't pensioners. Anyway here you can pay to join the NHS. I think it's 60 euros per month and that entitles you to all health service care with NO exclusion for pre-conditions.
