Meat, Have you noticed? I have

That pork with fat on is far more expensive than lean meat, I find it quite astonishing, fat seems more expensive than lean meat and they actually cut it off large joints.

Look at the price of fatty belly pork then look at some nice lean chops, is there a reason.

Also I saw some Lard, it was called something fancy like Prime Andalucian something or other, nearly €2 a pack.

I buy prime beef and make my own lean mince beef, it's no more expensive, most odd.

Oh and don't you just want to die for some of those chickens feet?

Can't say I'd noticed, but I'm very glad it's not the other way round! I absolutely hate fat on meat, or bones, my mother used to try to make me eat fat and I was always sick so eventually she gave up. I don't eat chops, spare ribs, belly pork (ugh! or any of the even worse things you see in the butchers' shops like pigs' ears and trotters, chicken feet and great lumps of what looks like solid lard. Those who like it are welcome to it, but why they'd be prepared to pay more, I've no idea.

Perhaps it's a cultural thing from the hungry years. If you have gone short, a bit of fatty meat is a real treat.

Fat makes me feel awfully sick. However, a good piece of belly pork nicely marinated and crisped up on a BBQ can be tasty. Depends how it's cooked.

Mmmmm yes, it's the closest thing I can get to crackling, once in a while I love it like that too

That is the problem with meat now, not enough fat. It is the fat which makes the meat juicy. A rib eye steak is lovely. You don´t have to eat the fat but you need it to make the meat cook better.

Just in from Mercadona, from the cool section ready packed I bought some nice lean beef diced €4 45 for the kilo, The mince beef 1 kilo € 4 85 and it's probably just colourd fat minced up, No contest if you are watching your fat intake.

I think also that certain Spanish dishes (in many cases we'd call them stews, but not all) use the fatty pork eg cocido or fabada. Consequently the demand is there and the price is maintained. I imagine UK butchers would merely cut off and discard fatty parts (or use pigs that have been reared with less fat)?

I remember a couple of old lags (one of them a retired doctor) a few years back talking about bread and dripping (pork fat). As they explained, go back enough years, and people didn't have that much to eat. Bread and dripping was not harmful, because people didn't get enough calories otherwise.

Lean beef was 40c cheaper than minced up crap, why didn't you buy 2 kilos of lean beef and mince half of it !

That's the key point. A side of meat costs much the same in the UK or Spain. The butcher chops it up into bits and sells each cut for the highest price he can get for it.

In Spain some fatty cuts are more popular than lean cuts so the price is higher.

It's just down to supply and demand. If everyone liked lamb's kidneys they would be €5 each. People generally don't so they are relatively cheap - the poor little lamb only has two of them!

As for mince - from my experience Spanish mince is not exceptionally fatty - it is just minced lean beef. It costs a tad more for the labour involved in mincing it. Even Lidl's cheap mince is less than 10% fat - about the same as lean stewing steak.

Spanish Lamb chops are skinny little things, all fat and bone at €15/kg. Real English cut chump or loin chops, an inch thick or more are the same price in Iceland or Gib. The Spanish don't do thick chops so the price of the thin ones is relatively high because that's where the demand is.

If you want to buy fatty mince then the UK is the place. You can buy mince at a ludicrously low price. It's the same with cheap pork sausages - some are so cheap I hate to think what rubbish goes into them!

Just look at some of the cheap products in Iceland - someone buys it!
