The diet I follow and have been for the last 8 years is very contraversial, but I have studied it at length and wouldnt change it for the world, so I hope no one even tries to lecture me on the "dangers" I lost 6 stone, I no longer have type 2 diabetes, arthritus gone, eczema gone, IBS gone.....

Nothing wrong with the Atkins diet. I'´ve been into weight training/body building for years and am on numerous bodybuilding boards as a respected member and as a moderator on the internet. When training I use a very low carb diet and I've even used the Atkins diet whilst training and gained muscle mass. Your body doesn't need all the carbs that we consume.

As Jo already knows, I am on a very similar diet to hers and have been for many years. It also cleared up several health problems that my experiment in vegetarianism years ago had only made worse.

The only diet I have ever lost weight on!!! Son has just announced his engagement so have dug the book out to try again and hopefully stick to it. Never ever felt hungry on this one.

Well, Atkins was right 100% in saying that refined carbs are pure poison, delightful tho they may be. It's not the healthiest diet in the world, but if you eat plenty of cabbage and the like with it, then I reckon it will work just as well.

I used it to lose a lot of weight too, and it is a brilliant diet to get a fat lazy git like me to lose weight while still eating the enjoyable stuff. I now tend to calorie count (until my OH suggests peanuts and a glass of wine..... sigh.) but there is no way I could have gone to that straight away.

Personally I favour the caveman diet, as it is more or less what we were evolved for. Lots of leaves and shots, a few roots, fruits and seeds, and seafood for the protein. No dairy, no red meat and no graminiferous carbs.

A baked potato is a luxury, not a staple.

Re: Meat eating in Spain

Well, we originally evolved to get that type of protein from grubs, the odd baby bird, etc etc, so, seafood is probably the nearest to that.

Are you allowed to use the Atkins diet if you´ve got slightly high cholesterol levels?

It depends on what is causing your high colesterol levels. You can do a variation of the Atkins diet, just stick to "clean" foods like fish, white meat and vegetables. Cut out the dairy & fat that the Atkins diet allows you to consume. Basicly just drop your carbs greatly, cut out any refind carbs. If you can get by without eating carbs for your first 3 or 4 weeks then gently introduce them but keep them to a minimum and as said don't toutch refind carbs. You will crave carbohydrates though and you will feel a little tired and run down to start with but it does get easyer. Once you're into your routine, have a "cheat" day just once a week where you will consume a high carb meal of your choice. This could be a carb high healthy meal or a pizza it's up to you. What this will do is cause your body to create a natural insulin spike which will again help you to reduce and burn fat at an even quicker rate (and it also help you lift your mood if the diet is getting you down). It's not an easy diet to stick to for the first few weeks but it does work and it can be done healthily.

I get sick of people whining about Atkins. You can eat a lot of veg material with it if you stick to the cabbage end of the glycaemic index and remember that sugar coated cereal is the food of the devil.

No-one advocates living on lard for the rest of your life, but as a tool to aid weight, it's a damn useful and effective one.

Mind you, listen to the screaming from those who make a living selling refined carbs, and the penny will drop.

Yes! The cholesterol thing is infinately more complicated than is ever explained and there are a lot of doctors who think your body produces more cholesterol when its got a problem - rather than it causing a problem! The cholesterol you eat has nothing to do with the cholesterol your body makes - they're totally different!

My last cholesterol reading which was about 5 years ago, 2 years into me doing Atkins was 3.5 - and the triglyceride was 0.1 - the lowest that my GP had seen - he then told me that low cholesterol was as bad as higth cholesterol

typical day's eating (remember, this is in the UK)

breakfast
muesli, soya milk and banana (or strawberries, blueberries)

toast, peanut butter and banana (or other fruit)
bagel

lunch
sandwich - mushroom paté lettuce & mustard, or salad-type things
soya yogurt
crackers with mushroom pate
soup
toast (you can get vegan margarine spread)
veggie samosas
pakoras
bahjis
beans

dinner
pasta with sauces (wholewheat spaghetti is really good with sauce)
veggie burgers
veggies sausages
potatoes
stir-fry with udon or soba noodles, or rice
vegetables
tofu (soft tofu is not nice - firm tofu, fried separately for several minutes on its own, then added to a dish gives a nice result) good source of protein

that's just a start, really - always remember to read every label and check the ingredients

Bot what about the poor plants? Struggling their whole life to reproduce, and here he comes, harvests and eats their unborn baby plants? Why is it different to eat a plant embryo like sprouts, or their seeds...or the plants themselves? Plants feel pain too!!!
