Madrid electric cars
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environmen...car-plan-spain
Does anyone have any more info on these cars as to size, price, date of availability, price per kilometer to run, etc.
TBH I thought the idea of electric cars was almost dead and buried and that the Hydrogen powered car was going to be the new "in thing".

Interesting stuff from that article..
They may find there's a bigger take-up than they expected, if it means free parking. Interesting too about the wind power. Sounds excellent when there's regular wind patterns, but where will the electricity come from when the wind drops?
The mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón, said owners of electric cars would be able to park for free in the city and would have their car tax cut by 75%. He predicted that electric cars would eventually become obligatory in city centres.
...
Electric vehicles would fit in well with Spain's extensive network of wind-powered generators. Wind turbines remain operative during periods of low demand at night, which is when car batteries could be charged up.

Re: Madrid electric cars
I saw somthing about electric cars on the TV recently.
There is a problem with lack of noise, a big part of road safety is hearing the engine noise of a car, not just visual.
They have been experimenting with putting some sort of noise, as with a petrol car, so there is less danger to pedestrians.

lol, I can see (or hear) it all now. Boy racers with chiped sounds of the Crazy frog or Scooter reving away at the traffic lights or maybe we'd just have to trust them to blast out Barbie Girl with the windows down.

I remember the first time I was in Reading, walking down the road on a misty Nov morning and there was this terrible noise above. Nobody but nobody looked up or took any notice. It was only later that I found out it was Concorde leaving Heathrow.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_vehicle
As Technology Review noted in June 2008, "Electric cars—and plug-in hybrid cars—have an enormous advantage over hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles in utilizing low-carbon electricity. That is because of the inherent inefficiency of the entire hydrogen fueling process, from generating the hydrogen with that electricity to transporting this diffuse gas long distances, getting the hydrogen in the car, and then running it through a fuel cell—all for the purpose of converting the hydrogen back into electricity to drive the same exact electric motor you'll find in an electric car." Thermodynamically, each additional step in the conversion process decreases the overall efficiency of the process

Re: Madrid electric cars
Good points there, I'd never really thought about the process of obtaining the hydrogen. I would genuinly be interested in one of these electric cars though as I live and work in the city centre.

Re: Madrid electric cars
At least with hydrogen you will be able to stop at a garage and fill up similar to the way we do it now with petrol.

Re: Madrid electric cars
also a good point and this is reiterated on the top gear video about them. I f I was to opt for an electric car then I would be limited to using it in and around the city and may then need another car for longer journeys. I would be worried about going somewhere then being stuck in traffic and my batteries draining with few pla ces to re-charge not to mention the time it takes to charge them.
