Default Lost/Stolen Passport Replacement in Spain?

From all info' I can find on the web it seems I have to go back to the UK to apply for a replacement passport. Anyone know if there are any exceptions to the rule?

I think I know where I left my passport, but need to be ready to act quickly if I have lost it.

this happened to me recently

first report it missing at the Guardia - you need the report paper

then you can get a new emergency one for emergency travel at the Embassy - I got mine in Alicante - on the spot in person

If you don't need an emergency one then you apply for a new one in the usual way through Madrid - enclosing the police report
