Out of interest, has anyone here kept their UK number and continued to pay their UK phone contract?

In Spain, Movistar is probably the best in my experience. They offer a very good value bundle deal with TV, phone and internet all included. Although saying that I never used to watch the TV so much. DAZN provides all of the Premier League for only 10€ per month.

I just noticed that Movistar have a nice Black Friday deal on. Check out their website.

The only downside is the UK roaming, but that's the same with most new contracts these days.
No worries, if you're ever in the Canarias just let me know and we'll grab a beer or two... or more.

Has the UK been relegated in roaming terms (EU vs non-EU) with Simyo, Digi or both?

I came here thinking someone would hit me with this advice at the very outset: "just focus on Simyo and Digi and forget the plankton" (as unusual as it sounds, the main telcos are just that from a consumer's perspective). But nobody did and I had to do my own homework over a couple of weeks to come to this conclusion myself.

In my case I'm moving my wife and two daughters to Simyo and switching my own SIM to Digi due to included international calls as I need to be able to call countries like Australia, Singapore, Poland, the UK, etc. without thinking twice about any additional costs involved. Here there are none.

I also did a check as my dad has a mobile contract in Australia that allows him to call internationally without additional charges. There's only one problem though - when he dials out his real number isn't displayed but shows up as some random number from a variety of countries like Belgium, Romania, the Netherlands, etc. Over here Digi is 100% sound in that when calling abroad your actual number shows up on the recipient's phone.

As things stand it looks like a 3+1 Simyo+Digi migration starting next week!

I'm still undecided between using both or lumping it altogether with Digi because of the deal when you bundle them and the desire for the Digi 1Gb over Simyo with 500Mb.
the roaming thing concerns me a little. I read that new contracts wouldn’t include the UK which is a bit annoying as my son travels there a lot. However, over on the Italian forum someone mentioned eSims which I found very interesting. Not much use in my sons case as Digi don’t do them yet and the UK eSims are only for contracts but next year I’ll be going to Canada very often where you can get them on PAYG deals. Being able to have the eSim before travel will be a big saver. Vodafone hit me with 2 charges of about 15 Euro last year for switching roaming on outside of the EU without data so no actual traffic.

astera How did the switch go? I opted for all with Digi. I called them on Sunday, missed the engineers on Monday, SIMs arrived yesterday morning then an engineer arrived. Unfortunately he couldn't get the fiber through the apartment so he's coming back with another pair of hands soon (we hope). Then I'll be able to put their 1Gb claims to the test
It was a slight shock as I was sure we had fiber with Vodafone, but apparently it's fiber to the street. The fiber in the apartment comes to the hallway, behind a mirror so not much use at the moment.

Simyo still treats the UK and Gibraltar as part of the EEA so roaming is still cheap. I tested this out a few weeks back.

Hi mate, I ended up porting all 4 mobile numbers to Simyo (as I already had a Digi card for my iPad) and it went smooth as silk. EVERYTHING was done online via their website and a couple of days later the SIM cards arrived via email. It could not have been easier.

But due to Digi having the best offer in Spain for int'l calling I'll be porting my mobile number to them in the coming days (wife & kids will remain on Simyo). Hopefully it'll be just as easy but I see now that they only let you port online into a contract... and then you have to call to switch from postpaid to prepaid. Hopefully things will go just as smoothly though I would have preferred to port straight to a prepaid offer (like I did when moving to Simyo).

How is Digi fibre working out for you? Is it as fast as they claim and were there any issues getting a cable inside the apartament to a convenient place where you want to set up your router?

Yes indeed, which is quite a plus in this day and age. This might have to do with the fact that Simyo belongs to Orange here so maybe they just have a deal with Orange in the UK to roam on their sister network? Do you remeber which network it connected you to in the UK?

Unfortunately we're still waiting for the fiber. They've got it to the building but we're waiting for the landlady to open a duct cover in the stairwell. It's a 2 inch thick slab of marble that nobody has managed to lift with the assortment of broken and poor quality tile suckers in the service cupboard. I wish they would hurry up as I've been itching to ditch Vodafone.

The mobile number port went very smoothly once they recognised and accepted my ID card.

Darn, that's certainly taking a while to get done! I remember our problems with the fibre installation from Movistar - the first guy came and simply said it cannot be done without digging up the asphalt to lay a cable. It took another visit (from a more capable installer) to finally see that other houses on our street have fibre... and that he can find his way through after removing a few potholes covers.

Did you have trouble with verifying the ID during the mobile number portability? I did everything online and there was no need for ID - I only had to type in my NIE. But then I was moving from a prepaid offer so maybe that made it easier?

About Digi, one thing I noticed about the SIM that I use in my iPad is that I cannot set up a portable hotspot. Are you seeing the same on your end?

Woah, I didn't notice that but hotspotting is indeed disabled. I might have to change again as it's pretty important for me.

I had a bit of a faff with the ID but that was because the old contract was in the good lady's name so they asked to see both which then opened another problem as our Spanish ID's are different to most. Just took a few minutes explaining so no big deal.

As for the installation, the landlady has just been around and dug out the marble cover so hopefully I'll have a full update in the coming days.

Some good news for at least two of you.

All Digi Sims support personal hotspotting. I thought so but given different packages have T and C's I just asked them. All support personal hotspotting.

Lol I should have read one of the posts a bit better...... The give away is iPad !

Apple is the problem. Just search " how to enable personal hotspot ( your model ) " and follow the instructions. It's easy.

Best

Thanks Loco
To activate it you need to go to Settings >Mobile Data > Mobile Data Network > scroll to Personal hotspot APN and enter digi.mobil

Very strange as I’ve never had to do this before.

Finally, it's done. The hardest part was getting from the hallway to the living room as the tubes must have been installed by a drunk and were jammed full of coaxial cables.

I'm getting 475/600 down/up on wired connections and upto 450/450 on wireless but to be honest I haven't noticed any difference and the router is a piece of junk compared to the Vodafone router. I use Powerline adaptors and they have slowed down despite the faster input. I'm hoping it's to do with the router so once I get a new one I'll report back.

In reality it makes no difference as I would rarely, if ever, use it to the max. Just very frustrating to see 40Mbps on the Powerline adaptors.

You might want to look at Lobster, they have about the same data as others (sometime more sometimes a little less depending on deals). Not unlimited data, but everything is in English which might just make life easier.
