lOOKING TO MOVE TO SPAIN FROM CANADA

I have my UK passport and my wife has both Uk and Canada

Looking to move to an area on the coast perhaps Valencia area and will purchase a home?
Heard OLIVA might be nice or Alicante area
Just way to costly to live here now we are taxed at 50% and not getting better
Too bad we have lived here most of our lives
Any advice ?

What visa would you qualify for? Obviously since Brexit having a UK passport isn’t helpful in the way it once was.

And where is ‘here’? I’m intrigued to know where the tax rate is 50%!

I recall from another forum that you are in Canada. As already mentioned without a European passport, getting a visa to live in Spain would be the first hurdle. Weren't you looking for a job in the USA as a soccer coach? Would that still be your objective in Spain?

Ted Lasoo is coming to Spain. That will be a challenge! If a Spanish team invite you, you may have the remotest chance of a visa - otherwise no chance!

First things first, what visa will you and wife qualify for.
Without a visa to allow you to stay permanently, your house will only be a holiday home.

The UK passport is a European passport... just sadly not a European Union passport anymore. :) As you mentioned it all looks completely different now and seeking residency will be the main hurdle. UK passport-holders can no longer simply move to Spain because they want to.

Haven't they recently changed the law?

So called "fast track" change is yet to be seen how effective is in practice. One is still looking for many months and legal costs for eviction.
However, families with child still cant be evicted, so not much changed in practice.
Only good change is 48h police intervention rule, but if you are away for more then few days, you will be locked out from your property.

I thought the law changed recently so that the police always get them out regardless of any 48h thing of the past?

Law change was for "fast track" and making it criminal offense. Problem with criminal offense, is that it can only be open when offender is identified fully.
I think this year will prove how efficient/inefficient new law change is.

Re: lOOKING TO MOVE TO SPAIN FROM CANADA

From what I've heard the change means that it no longer goes through court but the police simply drag them out instantly.

As to identifying them that is then a police matter and surely they have zero chance of leaving custody until they are fully identified.

Re: lOOKING TO MOVE TO SPAIN FROM CANADA

Police can only drag them out within first 48h of intrusion. No idea how one proves that.
Otherwise, only with court order can police evict them.

Identity comes to play if one wants to take case to criminal court. No identity, no case.
But time will tell how this works out in practice.

Re: lOOKING TO MOVE TO SPAIN FROM CANADA

That's the thing, the 48h thing is apparently no longer relevant and you skip the whole court order thing by showing the police the property deed and then in they go and clear the place out.

How did his question turn into a rant about squatters?
Thank you for reminding me why I stopped using this forum.
