Very interesting. I understand that the majority of Americans do not have a passport and are very limited in their knowledge of world events. "Blinkered" comes to mind.

American TV gives a great insight into the american psychy .... world news is only anything that has American interests (Iraq, Israel, US), brit or other TV shows (with the exception of BBC America) have to be remade as a US version - rather than just shown as we do int the UK with all the US shows and Oz shows like Niehgbours etc.. and I remember when Jeremy Clarkson went onto the streets of Las Vegas and interviewd 8 people and asked them to name 5 other countries and the capital of England .... precisely none could do so!! blinkered ..... YUP! |

Re: Living in isolation ????
I too would hate the isolation that glad2beback mentions - it's the main reason we live in a village and not an isolated finca up the mountain. We wanted electricity and proper plumbing, and a bar or two to go to.
However, cutting yourself off can be very therapeutic - my husband has stopped watching the news on the TV because all it shows you is screaming hoardes calling for the death of others and it makes him angry. He's deceided there is no point in getting angry, so he just doesn't watch it. We only have a newspapar occasionally. |

Also Poollounger, I can understand you wanting to get away and communicate with nature for a couple of weeks but when you live here you do miss things like the theatre (okay so we have Chiclana theatre but NOT quite the same as the West End or equivalent), exhibitions, concerts, and of course SHOPPING!!!!!! Of course the best thing would be if you had the money to just jump on a plane and like a junkie "get your fix" but unfortunately it´s not that easy when on a fixed income. On a personal basis I would love to go back to the UK for a two or three months a year and have a job and then I believe I would appreciate more the "retirement life" I have here.

Re: Living in isolation ????
Perhaps I mistitled my post. I drove into London yesterday, got yelled at for no reason by a particularly agressive security guard as I drove into Canary Wharf. I think I hadn't come to a halt on precisely the line he wished me to. The West End was packed with traffic and tourists. As to theatre etc CG. Well when I was younger and whizzed around town on my bicycle and knew people in the theatres and even how to gatecrash via the fire exits it was fun and I saw everything. Perhaps I am now burnt out !! Apart from it being incredibly expensive, even at the half price booths, where even at half price it is rarely less than aorund £30 a ticket, even for a play, there is so little that I feel truly inspired to go and see. I guess if I am one day living in Spain then I might miss it all. I even find reading the Sunday papers a bore. All other peoples opinions, and mostly dull as ditchwater.
And a friend assured me on Friday night that today was forecast to be the start of summer at 29C... hell it's grey and cool!!!! |
Re: Living in isolation ????
Currently in the UK, wet and grey now after 3 reasonable days. Here for another 10 days, and we just can't wait to get back. Everything is sooo expensive. We do live on an urbanisation in Spain, so no isolation, but tht's how we like it. No idea where we will be living in a couple of months as long as house sale goes through, but it WILL be in Spain.
