There was "el gran silencio" in Spain until not long ago; the Civil War was just not talked about here.
There are a number of well respected British historians, many of whom speak fluent Spanish, such as Paul Preston, John Elliott, Hugh Thomas, and Ian Gibson.
I'd recommend a recent publication by the late Henry Buckley, a war correspondent, entitled "The life & death of the Spanish republic".
I guess these historians did not live under Franco's regime when to publish would have been life threatening, if a publisher had ever dared to print their accounts.
Thankfully, this silence is slowly beginning to be heard.

I would fully agree with that summary.

This is a really excellent documentary series relating to the Spanish Civil War in six parts made by Granada/ ITV quite a while ago and brought to my attention by Aggy a year or so back.

They went because their open eyes could see no other way.

The Le Pen, Wilders, et al supporters currently infesting Europe should heed this gentleman's words at the end of the clip.

I've just given the Little Lion "Homage to Catalonia" to read. We'll see how he gets on with it. He can't yet read well enough in Spanish to read anything serious in the language.
