Light Fittings

Hi Guys, does anyone know if light fittings purchased here in UK (B&Q)will fit the Spanish electricial wiring, in particular ceilling lights. As you know, New Build comes with the wiring:frown: hanging out of the Ceilling!

They probably would fit but then you have to remember that light bulbs here are screw fitting. Carrefour have a good range and quite reasonably priced.

Also a good tip if you are bringing lamps over with you is to stock up on the bayonet lightbulbs.

They can fit, the wiring and everything is just the same, if you want to use B&Q make sure you get lights with ES (edison screw) not BC (bayonet cap) but you need to be aware of how they fasten to the ceilings.

In the UK its usually with two holes drilled and plugged with fixings then the light unit screwed into place.

Ceilings in Spain are not plasterboard like the UK, they are usually a solid (concrete block and beam) ceiling with a skimcoat of plaster, making drilling the fixing holes very tough, the Spanish lights use a hook system, a long hook is screwed into a swivel which pokes through the hole in the ceiling where the cable comes through, the hooks is tightened into place and then the light unit is simply hung from this hook, an outside cowl then slides up the fitment and held in place by a grubscrew to hide the wire connections and hook system.

But not all light fittings are that way. We had to drill holes in the ceiling for ours.

Another thing to watch out for is the way the wire (enclosed in a sheath) is coming out of the ceiling so as not to drill in wrong place. Wiring here isn't done as in England - straight up or straight across - it can be diagonal :eek:so beware if you decide to drill the walls.

Buy them over here, buy in the right place, and they will fit them as part of the purchase, especially if buying the ceiling fan ones, then when they are here you can ask nicely if they will fit others, they usually charge only a few Euros for each

There seems to be quite a lot of huge lighting shops dotted around Spain so you should not have a problem in finding what you want. Carrefour has limited choice.

Not sure of that area, but they seem to put them near all the big towns.
