ZILCH apart from health cover and a pension if you live long enough and have paid in for 35 years, there is no unemployment benefit
for self employed in Spain.

If I lose my job in Spain I get 70% of my salary up to 1,400 euros a month. Sounds a lot better than the £60 a week you get at in the UK. ok it only lasts between 6months-5 years depending how long you worked, but stil.....

Also, if your company wants to sack you they have to pay you 45 days salary for every year you have worked. I know someone who got a 100k euros payoff cos they had worked for 30 years

In that respect Spain wins hands down

In which case you are incredibly lucky. Most ex-pats of working age are unable to find a proper contracted job and have to be self-employed. It's quite a bit different in those circumstances!

Yes, of course prices have gone up here in Spain.

So of course I'm not as well of in Spain as I was when I came here.

But I do go back to the UK, and I was there last month and people should compare the whole package, not just supermarket costs.

Here I pay €400 a year "council tax"
I pay €100 a year road tax
I pay about €120 a year water

My supermarket bills are cheaper, and the quality is better
So although this isnt supposed to be a comparison test, I'd say yes it is harder than it was, say, two years ago ......... but its damned better than the quality of life and cost of living that I would experience back in the UK still.
I agree these things are cheaper in Spain, but telephone/internet and household goods are so expensive it evens out.

Just don't agree, sorry.I have brought groceries home from Spain which have gone mouldy the same day. Never happened in the UK

Nor in the UK, although the same amount of money would probably be made up by another benefit.

Yes once you are "in the system" in Spain it is a great and generous system to be in. It is getting in it that is the problem. I'm sure we've been through this is thousand times before but it is the reason why so many Spanish kids live with their parents into their 30s. And also why if you maybe dont speak 100% fluent Spanish and/or are extremely qualified why getting a contracted job is very difficult

Well ..... I can only speak for this area
I was gobsmacked when I first started to go shopping here. When I go back to the UK and look at the fish and meat counters in Tesco I actually laugh!
Cheese counters, everything ..... less choice
Vegetables, smaller in the UK and as I say better quality here and I can actually taste them!

You wanna come and live up here you do

Most UK vegetables come from Spain anyway. They are grown in the big plastic greenhouses with no soil. they are then chemically treated so they wont go off (and so they dont taste of anything) and shipped off to UK supermarkets.

Spanish people dont eat these vegetables because their disgusting instead they get the proper stuff, a lot from local producers. it goes off more quicly bc they are not bred or treated to last a long time, but they taste a 1000% better. One word to prove it for you. TOMATOES

This is not solely for financial reasons, it is also cultural. I know numerous men here in Spain (or boys depending on your point of view) who still live with their parents despite having owned their own property for several years. The property sits vacant whilst they are mostly just waiting until they get married so that the new wife can wash and darn their socks instead of their mother.

There are HUGE stigmas attached to men in their 30s who still live with their parents in the UK (losers, ugly as shite, total virgins), in Spain the men/boys don't have the same labels stuck to their foreheads so no pressure to get the hell out of mum and dad's place pronto (or remain a virgin for the rest of their lives)!!

no, they just coat them with loads of crap to stop them going mouldy, like all oranges etc are wax coated. Here all fruit is sold as is, so ', yes they don't last as long, but they must have been showing signs of going off when you bought them, or they got left in a very hot place..
