Letter from Hacienda

Hola all,

We've received one of those signed for thingys for the post office it has Hacienda on it and part of a code....it needs to be collected within 7 days rather than the normal 15....

The problem is that we've missed the post office today and we're meant to be leaving tonight on holiday...

There were a few similar ones in our neighbour's post boxes so I wondered if anyone else had received one yesterday or today and if they could give me an idea of what it could be....

I know am clutching at straws a little but would rather not delay our holiday

Thanks
x

You do realise that once you've picked it up the clock starts ticking on whatever it's about? I'd be inclined just to go on holiday and let them send another copy. They'll know you haven't received it.

AQh I've just realised If you put in any tax return it will be the result of that. It's very likely if you're retired just to be a 'you don't owe anything letter'. If you pay any tax yes it will be informing you of how much they've already put back in your account if you're below a certain threshold. This is the time of year for it!

Wasn't it even possible to translate the odd word which may give a clue, such the Spanish for "unless", "unlawful", "punishment", "penalty" or "imprisonment"?

;)

If it is for paperwork, then you have 10 working days ( inc Saturday! Even though they are closed -) to provide it, oh, and it has to be translated as well !

I had a letter last year, and had to provide evidence for a deduction I made for double taxation. I believe they are trying to cut down on this, saying you have to reclaim it from HMRC ( which you can, if the income is not taxable only in the UK).

It would be helpful if you could confirm what it's about, as it's good information for advising people how they treat things.

I too hope the OP keeps us informed, hundreds of thousands of us, I think.

When we got back earlier my wife took a large envelope from our post box and announced that it was a letter from the tax people. I immediately crossed myself, but after she tore it open with shaky fingers she said it was from the English tax authorities giving her tax code for next year.

We might celebrate later.
