can anyone shed any light on the approximate cost of a new, middle of the road wi fi enabled laptop would be over there. Don't know whether to get one here and take it with me or get one there. They seem to be cheap as chips here at the moment, £350 - £450 ish.

The prices are pretty much the same - just like the UK you have to shop around.

Try comparing the prices from DELL by looking at their UK site www.dell.co.uk and their Spanish site www.dell.es

Remember that warranties (on many items) may not be valid in Spain if bought in the UK.

Had this one for Christmas, Acer Aspire 5720, was €699 in Boulangers although saw it for €1,032 in El Corte Inglaise (not spelt right)the other day. If you buy here it will be in Spanish, so I am learning a lot at last !

Not if you buy from Dell/Spain. They will give you English Windows and UK keyboard at no extra cost.

I bought an Acer Aspire 5102 just recently for 549€ in one of the La Oportunidad electrical stores.

Might be reading too much into it - but I thought Spain and England were both in the European Union - would it be legal if manufacturers warranties ended at internal borders?

Good question, but Dell are US importers/exporters . Not sure if that may be an issue. import to uk one warranty, import to spain another.

OK....here's the SP on laptops!

If you buy a laptop in the UK the warranty is still valid here BUT the machine can only be collected from and delivered back to a UK address. Logistical nightmare!

Secondly, unless you have to have mobile computing, get a desktop. More for your money, parts are generic, and no problems further down the line.

Be aware that if your laptop suffers a major failure outside of warranty (particularly the screen) expect to bin it. You'll pay more to repair it than buying a new one.

Finally, if you have to have a laptop, go for the one with the longest warranty. At least you're guaranteed to have it working for that period....after that you take your chances.

The one to avoid....sorry to tell you but it's Acer! Screens seem to go regularly, the keyboard trays have no strong base so end up dipping and bending, and the CD/DVD drives seem to expire as well. Their warranty and returns is pretty prompt though....but don't expect years of service once this period has ended.

No, they manufacture all PC's for Europe in Eire.

If you buy one in the UK or Spain it comes from the same place and it's not the US.

One of the reasons I prefer DELL is that they offer extended warranties at sensible prices.

A 3 year on site, next day warranty costs just over 100 euros on a desktop and about 170 on a laptop. They can offer a 4 year warranty for a little extra.

Think all new ones come with vista, may be wrong, I prefer XP but only because I am used to it, saying that, am managing with vista, just takes some getting used to.
