Seems like my speculation on the real source of the blockage (post #19) may be bang on the money 😏

Previously a ticket for being 5km over the limit in Amsterdam (120kph but when its raining 100kph) followed me back to the UK about 14 years ago. Just a fine but there you go.

Fines can follow you home thanks to vehicle owner data, but points are too different between countries to follow you onto your new licence. Some count up, some count down, some countries give you more points for being good (if they count down), they have different scales (e.g. Italy allows up to 30), and you get different points in different countries for the same kind of infractions.

But not necessarily immediately. It varies per country.
In France, if you hold a UK driving licence issued before 1.1.21 you are only obliged to swap your UK licence for a French one either when it is due to expire (ie you can't renew it with another UK licence) or when you commit a traffic offence.
And in practice not always then, because I got a speeding fine which in theory should have deducted a point or two but I was never asked to change my licence, I paid the fine and that was the last I heard of it.

ET highlights one of the main reasons why points exchange does not and cannot work, or at least not until there is a totally uniform EU wide licencing system and that ain't going to happen in my grand children's lifetimes!

Minor speeding in France (less than 20kph over the limit) results in a fine and the loss of a single point (out of 12) which, if you are a good boy and don't get caught again, you automatically get back in 6 months. They are not recorded anywhere either.

Yet they can demand a licence exchange for that single point but in my 11 years in France I never once heard of it happening.

I had maybe 3 or 4 of those in my time yet when I did dob my UK licence in for a French one I got the full 12 points on it.

It does to the Ukraine. The EU is sending billions a week in gas payments for Russian ammo and missiles.

The anti U.K. , Brexit sentiment on here is hilarious. Like kids on Twitter.

I think it’s because most people can’t afford to move back.

Seems post Brexit house prices are much healthier than Spain’s.

For the record I didn’t vote Brexit and love Spain.

I note you fail to mention the difference between how the EU has dealt with Ukraine refugees versus uk

Without knowing the financial situation of individuals I wonder how you come to that conclusion?

Please do not make this sort of assumption on this site. Some people do move back when it suits them, some stay because they do not wish to move back and some may well stay due to economics but each will decide according to their own wishes or needs. Personally I stay because I am totally integrated in my very Spanish town, have loads of friends and love my life here and in case you now leap to the conclusion that it is all about the sun I can assure you that it does not figure at all in any of my decisions.

Im not looking to offend anyone. Apologies.

Just find the anti U.K. sentiment on here a bit shocking.

Im no fan of Brexit, but to say the country has suffered since in comparison to EU is wrong.

The vaccine roll out and our response to Ukraine is proof of that. Which is why Macron is posturing for new political and defence “communities”.

The EU realised what they were missing when they had no decent intelligence regarding the Russia/Ukraine situation prior to the invasion.

The EU response and support of Ukraine has been embarrassing and highlights how poorly and inefficiently it functions. As did its efforts to purchase vaccines.

There is a reason refugees travel through the EU, then risk their lives in inflatable boats to cross the English Channel.

Because most people can afford one house.

If they bought in Spain a few years back, or even a year ago. U.K. house prices have rocketed and most in Spain haven’t.

I bought a buy to let in 2011 for £110,000 that is now worth £350,000. It’s the opposite for many people who moved to Spain at that time.

No one buys property as investments unless it's high end or places like Madrid or Barcelona. Continuous development means there is always a surplus. Plus buying and selling cost easily wipes out any 5 to 7 year inflation rates. The UK is very different due to housing shortage. If you are thinking of spain as an investment unless you buy at very high end in areas which are deemed desirable by the Spanish upper classes you are going to get an extremely poor return
