Re: Just how cold does it really get???
Hi Nats
My house is in Velez-Malaga, which is the capital of the Axarquia region in Malaga province. It is a large, working town rather than a resort and although there are a number of foreign residents (about 3% of the total I think the latest census figures showed) it is still very much Spanish with not much English spoken in shops, restaurants, etc. We are 5km inland from the coast at Torre del Mar, with good public transport links (37 buses per day between us and Malaga from Mon-Fri, for example), a large hospital, great range of shops, etc. I live in the old part of town within the original city walls which does not have any car traffic (not the best for anyone who couldn't cope with carrying their shopping home, but I love it!). Today we have got a load of building materials delivered for the latest renovation project, which had to come by tractor and trailer. I rang the guy who does the deliveries, and within 2 hours he had been to the house to collect the invoices, been to 2 different suppliers to collect the stuff and delivered it to our house. I call that pretty good service - all for 30€. |

 You can't be serious??? Last night, I was sitting out in the plaza until gone 2.30 in my T shirt, because that was the coolest place to be! It was far too hot indoors to be able to sleep. Still, talking of dressing gowns...................it won't be long before you'll be able to see all the lovely sights we were telling you about last autumn and winter ;) :D |

Seriously Sam :( We are 800 metres above sea level in the mountains and it is getting cooler now in the evenings  We've even been told to expect snow in the winter months
You'd better make sure your dressing gown is a nice fleecy one then! :D |

Re: Just how cold does it really get???
This will be my first winter here and I'm definitely looking forward to not spending 3 months freezing! :D
I understand it drops to about 15 degrees where we are and I know it won't exactly be sunbathing weather, but...winter sun can't be a bad thing  |

In the winter we have a duvet, a blanket and an electric blanket! Still warm and sunny in the day outside though! |
Re: Just how cold does it really get???
Hi Eve
You wanted to know more about Velez ..... you may be sorry you asked! The area within the old city walls is called La Villa. To get there from the Ayuntiamento in the Plaza las Carmelitas you go up the road towards the Hacienda office and take the second street on the right, which has orange trees along both sides. Carry on up the hill past the San Juan de Bautista church which brings you into the Plaza de la Constitucion. At the far end of the Plaza de la Constitucion on the right, immediately after the rubbish bins, there is a small turning leading up to an archway in the walls, with a tile mural showing Velez in the 15th Century above it. Go through the archway and you are in La Villa, the oldest part of the town. You will see some purple flags hanging from lamp posts and if you follow them it will take you up to the Iglesia de Santa Maria which has been converted in the Semana Santa Museum (and past my house!). If you have any energy left to keep climbing after that you can get up to the Fortaleza on top of the hill, or to be more accurate the remains of it. Velez has expanded an awful lot just in the 4 years since we bought there, with all the new apartment blocks being built all round the edge of the town, but that doesn´t impinge on us up in La Villa, luckily. It's really like stepping back in time but still with all the mod cons in your own house, best of both worlds I think, and only about 5 minutes walk to all the shops and amenities. Enjoy your visit if you make it down from the winding road to Competa, if I see anyone wandering round looking lost in La Villa I will ask if it is you! |
Re: Just how cold does it really get???
I first went to Velez Malaga in 1978 with my parents - an acquaintance owned a house in the old part of the town. Unfortunately, when we approached the taxi drivers at Malaga Airport, none of them wanted to take us. The one that did agree to take us, indicated with a machine gun noise and the word "bandidos" that it might not be a safe place to take your holidays. We spent one night there - the accommodation was dire and it really wasnt ideal - the bars were full of old Spanish men who were not at all welcoming. So we went down the road to Nerja which, even then, was a tourist resort. My parents had never been out of the UK before and were happy.
I returned to Velez Malaga about four years ago, just to wander around the old town and thought how lovely it was. Just wondered how you get along with the bandidos? :D |
Re: Just how cold does it really get???
Well, we certainly have a number of vecinos who could play the part of bandidos without needing any attention from the costume or makeup departments, but we get along with them fine!
I believe from what I've read in the local Spanish papers that the old part of town was virtually abandoned until as recently as the 1980s when people started to do up the old houses. Lots of the Spanish owners are I think very happy to offload them to the mad foreigners and move into a nice new piso. I wish I'd been looking for a house back in 1978, I could probably have bought a whole street! |
