The Costa Granada was renamed The Costa Tropical to differentiate it from the Malaga coast normally referred to as the Costa del Sol. The only thing Tropical about it is the fact that it has a higher abundance of "tropical" fruit growing in the area. Torrox Costa just west of Nerja has a huge sign on the boundry proudly proclaiming that Torrox has "The best climate in Europe". That's probably just the opinion of the local tourist office! |

Excellent website here for all environmental info on Spain. I tried to post in the Big Spider thread, but it didn't work for some reason.
http://www.iberianature.com/ You have to have so many posts before you canput urls on, until then they have to be moderated.;-) |

Its not quite the same thing but the WHO have studied and proclaimed that the middle bit of the Spanish Med coast and its hinterland is the healthiest place in Europe to live and climate must be one of the factors considered. I certainly wouldn't disagree with that John! |

This was the 'Spring' visit to our villa, first week of March this year. The temps during the night were really really cold, although during the day it got well into the 70's, as can be seen by the sunlight behind the car!

Re: Just how cold does it really get???
Believe it or not, several people were complaining of feeling cold at the Northern C Blanca meet up in August this year. I think it was about 25 degrees at the time. :)

Jean....................slippers are ESSENTIAL! Last winter, my Dad sent me some Norwegian fur lined boot type slippers, because I was always complaining about the cold indoors  They were brilliant  It seems so strange to think that it won't be all that long until the cold starts creeping in; especially as I'm sitting here in T shirt, shorts and flip flops! :p Honestly, last winter when I wanted to sit at the PC, I had to wear 2 pairs of socks, 2 sweatshirts, a fleece and GLOVES!! I kid you not  Don't be too put off though Jean - the other 3 seasons are fantastic, and more than make up for a couple of months of cold weather. |

P.s. Bring the quilts though, and don't throw the woolies out ;) |
Re: Just how cold does it really get???
It does also depend a lot on the type of property. My apartment is modern and well insulated and can be heated within a few hours with gas heater and oil rads, even when it has been empty for a while and feels like a fridge.
However, all the things mentioned are valid. Like warm slippers and rugs etc., they really make the difference. |
Re: Just how cold does it really get???
Take heed of everything people say, I just looked at the first post by mistake and realised I do actually have furry earmuffs out there in the house, sad but true, you just never know when they might be needed!! OH says that us girlies are unbelievable for having or doing things just in case, like going to the loo, just in case, he firmly believs that you can only go if you need to, us girlies know better!! Luv Eve xx:rofl: |

Re: Just how cold does it really get???
Last winter was my first as a resident in Spain and I thought it was pretty mild compared to previous winter holidays we had spent in our house (which is 5km inland and not up in the mountains). We hardly had to use our gas heater at all. I did buy a hot water bottle and sat with it on my lap whilst watching TV at night, as I found my hands got chillier than anything else and I refuse to wear gloves indoors!

Of course, this summer has been much more bearable than last, too! Isn't it ridiculous that you have to get UNdressed to go OUTside!!!? When the sun is shining during the day, it's usually still very pleasant outdoors. |

What about submarines? If it's colder the higher you go above sea level . . . .

Re: Just how cold does it really get???
Also it is often warmer outside in winter than in the older type of house, strange but true. the houses are built to keep heat out , definately not heat in, but you sort of get used to it.
Luv Eve Don't forget to vote for Hugo!:wub: |

Re: Just how cold does it really get???
Hi Nats
My house is in Velez-Malaga, which is the capital of the Axarquia region in Malaga province. It is a large, working town rather than a resort and although there are a number of foreign residents (about 3% of the total I think the latest census figures showed) it is still very much Spanish with not much English spoken in shops, restaurants, etc. We are 5km inland from the coast at Torre del Mar, with good public transport links (37 buses per day between us and Malaga from Mon-Fri, for example), a large hospital, great range of shops, etc. I live in the old part of town within the original city walls which does not have any car traffic (not the best for anyone who couldn't cope with carrying their shopping home, but I love it!). Today we have got a load of building materials delivered for the latest renovation project, which had to come by tractor and trailer. I rang the guy who does the deliveries, and within 2 hours he had been to the house to collect the invoices, been to 2 different suppliers to collect the stuff and delivered it to our house. I call that pretty good service - all for 30€. |
Re: Just how cold does it really get???

 You can't be serious??? Last night, I was sitting out in the plaza until gone 2.30 in my T shirt, because that was the coolest place to be! It was far too hot indoors to be able to sleep. Still, talking of dressing gowns...................it won't be long before you'll be able to see all the lovely sights we were telling you about last autumn and winter ;) :D |
