We r in the same boat as what to do if we ever get to Spain!
I'm the one who thinks it will be an adventure while the OH says we
Can't move unless we have jobs!! As I've been told before jobs
R like hens teeth. So we have a few options but not sure if I have
My rise coloured spectacles on!
Option 1: buy 2 houses and rent one out while we live in the another.
Option2: just rent a house and live off our savings.
We will be selling one of our houses in Oz and renting the other out just
In case we have to come back to Oz.
Roughly bringing over 300,000.00 euros.
We have two children to put through school so that will eat into savings!
Hubby is an air conditioning/ refrigeration mechanic. We haven't even
Starting Spanish lessons and we r hoping to move December the earliest!!!
Is this a pipe dream? I really need to get closer to home .....

Dont assume you'll be able to rent a house out in Spain, it may sit empty, be prepared to lose a lot of money, hope for the best, but expect the worst!

Thats all I can say really

True Jo, there are probably as many places to rent as there are for sale.
We now have a 3 bed house for nearly the same rent as the 2 bed flat we rented.

& we're paying less for a 5 bed house with a basement garage than we were paying for a 3 bed apartment 6 months ago - on the next urb with exactly the same facilities (indoor & oudoor pool, gym, jacuzzi, gardens)

and amazing mountain views, too :D

Listen to your other half!:) It'll be an adventure even if you get jobs, and with no Spanish (or even with it) that sounds highly unlikely. ;)

Spain is a good place to have money. It is not a good place to make money.

Although if you are fortunate enough to be in the first category, it's wise to keep it a secret, or else it can easily end up in other's pockets.

Thanks Everyone,

Yes the more i read about Spain the more sense it makes to stay in Oz.
I even looked into owning a franchise but whats the point if nobody is spending and are out of work.
I will just have to have longer visits as Im not sure it will be worth buying a place over there for us to stay and let the relatives from England enjoy it when we arent there.
Looks like Im stuck in Perth for the time being:(

I know it's technically probably not allowed, but if you're hankering after having somewhere in Spain but it's the maintenance when you're not there that's the bugbear, before you actually find and sign for somewhere, why not tell the family upfront you're considering renting a holiday home but would have to ask them to contribute if they use it when you're in Oz? Not go fullblown into paying a management company or anything, or renting to strangers, just get a bit to help meet the bills. After all the key would presumably remain under your control so if you weren't happy you could 'not' make it available to them? .....mind you families can fall out over the smallest thing so maybe not.......!!

Re: Jobs

I have lived and worked here for nearly 9 years and it has been a major struggle at times. Things are as bad now as they have ever been in my time and unless you have something definite to come to, I would think very seriously before you come here.
If I had a euro for every person who had told me they were coming to Spain and needed work but were "prepared to do anything", I would be quite well off now. I have seen people turn work down because it is "only 5€ an hour and I wouldn't get out of bed for that".
If you do make the jump, you must seriously be ready to do anything that comes your way and you will have to go out and find it, it most definitely won't come to you.

As I say in all my posts, it depends where in Spain... I have been in Jerez de la Frontera for over 2 years and I have always worked. Sure salaries do not compare to what I was earning in the UK, but the expenses are less than half.

We have 2 kids a dog and rent a 3 bedroom house with a huge garden, live comfortably and still manage to put money into savings each month.

As for the buildings window cleaning, here in Jerez de la Frontera I know people who belong to an "unemployed association" that actually do this and also clean graves and put flowers in the local graveyard in exchage of a few euros....

P.S. the best companies to work for are air conditiong fitters, if you find a vacancy that is...
