The Jasmine Revolution.

First Tunisia, now the mighty Egypt, the news channels are full of people taking to the streets to remove their dictators and Cairo appears to be on fire. If the revolutions succeed, there will be some almighty changes around the southern side of the Med.

Us UK expats in Spain don’t live that far away from the troubles, do we?

What will they get next, Muslim radicals. All those countries have gone the same way.

That’s what I thought first of all, but the demonstrators seem to just want more freedom, and nothing to do with religion.

In the short term, Spain is bound to benefit because tourists will no longer feel safe in Egypt and Tunisia and come to Spain instead.

I also wonder if the revolution could spread to our nearest north African neighbour, Morocco, although their King seems to have the support of his people.

What the demonstrators want and what they get is different. All those countries just swap a corrupt dictator for a bunch of religous tyrants.

Yes. I hope they don't find they're worse off in a few years time.

I've always thought that the Arab/muslim countries seem to be plagued with dictators, secular or religious, and that a secular dictator often gives rise to fundamentalist growth. Nothing would please me more than seeing a move away from dictators, but to a more secular, democratic state.

That way lies a more peaceful world.

The biggest effect would be if such a revolt were to take place in Saudi Arabia. At the moment I don't think this could happen (for one thing the regime tries to look after/bribe its population with a guaranteed income) but the consequences could be enormous if there was an uprising.

HBG,
I have a feeling the title of your post will be a prophetic one in not that short a time.
I don't think many realise the significance.........yet.

A bit of an exaggeration I feel. Yes, the UK is in a bad way, and confidence has definitely slumped recently. People are beginning to realise that folk like Osborne and Cameron don't really have a clue on how to tackle the nation's ills. But, the government will fall at some point, there'll be another election, and then the next set of imbeciles will be voted in. If things get really bad (and I give it 50%) then yes, the IMF will be asked in to run things for a while. Revolution? No way - most people are hooked to X Factor or the internet, to bother taking to the streets. Of course, the students are revolting, but then they always were! :D
