Ingenious Way of Beating Hand Luggage Allowance

A friend of mine who is a regular traveller was at Stanstead last week and was asked by the check in desk operator if he would put his hand luggage in the little cage to check the size. This was fine. He was then asked to put it on the weighing machine and it was 10.6 kilos. With this particular airline whom we all know and love the weight limit is 10 kilos, so he was asked to pay 30 or 35 pounds to put the bag in the hold. He refused and opened his case and took out the clothes in it. He then proceeded to strip his tee shirt off and started to unbutton his pants in order to put the clothes in the case on underneath what he was wearing. At this point a Manager rushed over and said, "Please proceed to the boarding gate we won´t worry about the little extra". So who says this weight allowance isn´t a money maker for a certain airline.

If travelling through Stansted with Ryanair, and only having a Cabin bag, surely you don't need to go anywhere near a check in desk ? And if you are stopped at the boarding gate they don't have weighing scales.

At Malaga they checked the bags at the gate too and some that had got through the baggage check then had to check their bags in at the gate!! I think it was only for size rather than weight but the bloke that had to part with his bag at the gate had already had it checked for size at the baggage check so I'm not sure what happened there....I could speculate but it might be libel...

They sit at the first customs gate and pull a few out now and again to weigh.

Yes they do, a VERY nasty Lady walked along the line a few weeks ago and picked on all the Lady´s on their own with large bags, weighed and measured them then sent said Lady´s back to pay and put their bags in hold...a total bully

I know one person in particular doing it on a regular basis with great success.
In addition to the regulation ten kilo bag there must be close on the same weight of more heavy goodies such as English bangers and bacon stashed away in their extremely copious pockets, in place of the more customary rabbits and ferrets.
No doubt by now O Leary and his cronies are trying to figure out a way to block the loophole,......but short of putting a weight limit on all passengers, or banning bacon, bangers and heinz baked beans, due to the risk of a catastrophic explosion, I can't see too much they can do about it.

Obviously the odd half kilo makes no difference and it's good to see that someone in the airport had the common sense to wave through the pax. in the original article, but so many people are just taking the mickey.

Since I go to the trouble of weighing my carry-on bag before leaving the house and making sure I stay within the limits, it really irks me to see all these people who can barely lift their "hand luggage" and who blithely assume the rules shouldn't apply to them. I'm very happy if they get caught as it helps keep the price of my ticket down, as well as stopping my little bag getting crushed between their massive packs.

But what you are describing is what happened back in March but they waited until we were all queued up at the gate before pulling people out! Being with mainly Italians flying back to Milan it was a real entertainment as the Italians, like the Spanish just love to argue!! And the more the Italians argued, the more adamant the Spanish became that they had to stick their bags in the hold!

Was this through the new terminal?? What gets me is the total lack of security there!! People arriving and departing are all in the same place. Never been to an airport like it before. It looks very nice, but it didn't feel secure....

I don´t know about terminals I never use Stanstead myself. But surely this must delay the plane? I usually fly Vueling and never have a problem and you can have a handbag as well.
