Importing Classic Motorcycles.
 

Hi all, newbie here, hopefully I can get a bit of help/info. I am looking at moving to Valencia region later this year, I own 5 classic motorcycles and one modern one, all of which I want to bring for various reasons. I understand the importation of the modern bike although some of the posts I read regarding headlamp beams is worrying, modern/new motorcycles have flat beam, not a beam that kicks up one side like the old days, it seems some ITV testers are not away of that, how one gets around that god knows....
For the Classic bikes, it may not be so easy with a couple, firstly an old Triumph, its not standard as in bars, exhausts and a few small bits, will this be a problem? then the big one, I have an 80's Yamaha that is totally rebuilt using parts from modern bikes, so wheels, forks, tyres, brakes etc etc is not standard, what will happen when I try and import that, or can I get away with not importing it as its only going to be ridden on high days and holidays? I am hoping to get away without becoming a resident just yet but will be buying property, I work on yachts so will be away from my home a month at time, so maybe I can get away with not importing all.

You should join one of several Spanish classic motorcycle clubs. They will be better placed to advise you.

Many of the clubs have got a Specialist Member who may also be registered with the DGT to issue certification etc. Anything is possible if you throw enough cash at it but Spanish type approval is totally different to the UK (although they were supposed to harmonised into the whole EU type approval scheme ... welcome to Spain!)

Normally, you cannot just change or 'bolt on ' stuff without altering the Ficha Tecnica at a test station with an examination required.

Not intended as a dig at you personally, I can empathise in fact because I'll be importing a classic car shortly - albeit a pretty much standard one so I don't anticipate too many problems - however regardless of the actual topic it's hard to support or defend use of the term "can I get away with it" when contemplating beginning a new life in a new country.

With Brexit looming I'm sure there will more than a few now regretting in some cases many years of 'winging' it, and not just in Spain.

Your only problem might be with insurance,it's getting difficult to get a quote for cars over 25 years old.I could only get mine covered by Liberty Seguros.

Difficult for comprehensive insurance cover ... if you are happy for third party then it´s not normally an issue.
