You insure against a risk and the company pays out to cover the loss.

In the case of an illegal house with major damage it would be almost impossible to get the relevant building permissions to repair it so I guess you would just get the money.
So if someone is insured and the government bulldoze the house down, do the insurance companies pay out for the person to be able to buy/rebuild somewhere else?
With so many houses lost in the fire deemed illegal and many may have had insurance, it will be interesting to see how the insurance companies deal with it. I hope they do pay out otherwise the people are going to be in serious trouble if everything they had went up in smoke.

Probably not as demolition by order of the Junta is not an insured risk.

If someone drove a bulldozer into it accidentally it would be covered.

Came across this, so it might be best if people check with their insurance companies. Especially down here as I wouldn't trust some of the reps who are selling insurance, especially if on commissions, etc.

If a company wanted to exclude cover if the building was illegal it would have to state that in the policy as a specific exclusion.

As always with insurance you need to check the fine print.

We generally advise people to declare the legal status of their property on the application form to avoid any doubt. Some insurance companies have subsequently declined cover.

Another good reason to sign the petition to restore some transparency and clarity to the marketplace.

- How many years have you been waiting for a PGOU (town plan) to be approved by the regional government?

- How many houses have been legalised where you live?

- How many days since the local elections and all those promises? 489

- Still waiting for your court case to be heard?

- Still waiting for compensation?

Over 1,200 people have now signed this petition. We need more to be effective.

Couldn't open the Telegraph link - they seem to be muddling up Greece with Spain.
