I used to live in Edinburgh and originally Airbnb was a cheap option for young people to visit the city. Now everyone seems to see it as a way to buy a place with an extra room and use it as an income to pay the mortgage. Edinburgh's royal mile is now almost all Airbnb and like Barcelona it is starting to anger residents. It is an income source that does little to benefit local communities and simply encourages mass tourism and the subsequent environmental damage caused by over consumption
Basically this is the Airbnb for swimming pools and people rent out their pools. I have no idea how it works with health and safety and I can imagine the joy when your neighbour suddenly has a public swimming pool :-).

My husband likes meeting people, having more space than in a hotel room, being able to cook his own food and just experiencing life in another country when on a business trip, rather than going from hotel to meeting and vice versa. For him it's far preferable, he travels a lot on business and hates the soullessness and loneliness of hotels.

Me 3... booking.com
I've also used VRBO with great success..... but they do appear to be loading on the additional charges - their own service charge (over and above the cleaning charge) is a fairly new one....

The original idea seems to be long gone and at least some cities like Palma are tackling the problem. I've only recently heard of Swimmy https://swimmy.es/
