This Hurricane Warning?

Is it real?

Some people tell me Michael Fish. Others' tell me it's very real. Could devistate the west coast of Portugal and Spain. Inland Spain and the south coast are apparently safe whatever.

I'm a little bit concerned as I'm currently enjoying a mates campervan on the coast of Galicia and inland at Santiago.

Should I drive south now?

I don't know. That's why I asked here.

Some people seem convinced it's on it's way. Others are completely dismissive. A report in a local paper yesterday suggested 140+ KPH winds by Saturday.

I just looked on the meteostat, but TBH - I haven't a clue what those pics mean

On one hand, I think if it was a real threat we would all know about it. On the other...

No. Hurricane, or not, I wouldn't chance a ferry this weekend. It's going to be big, wet, and windy whatever. At least not a ferry from northern Spain, unless you're up for a bit of excitement!

I think it's a real threat. I'm booking a hostal room for the weekend :)

Hmmm, a couple of year ago the Portuguese authorithies gave a warning for a 30 meter high tidal wave coming towards the Algarve. Turned out to be a heatwave........

I usually check a surfer´s website www.windguru.cz which has proven to be very accurate. For the Spanish soutwest area (Isla Canela) it´s going to be a bit windy, 29 knots from the South West. http://www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=1151

For the Lisbon area a maximum of 33 knots, http://www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=181561

Warnings were all over the TV this morning. All outdoor events have been cancelled on the north coast of Spain.

But are there any hurricanes forming on the ocean currently? I do remember about ten years back the tailend of hurricane "George" hit Portugal and Spain. I remember it ´cause it caught me out while sailing the Algarvian coast, lost a dinghy which washed up on shore about 15 km.of where we´ve lost it. And lots of damage in the North of Spain.

Re: This Hurricane Warning?

The last hurricane to hit NW Spain was only about 13 months ago. I have read in the local paper that it will hit Pontevedre about 12 noon and then will reach A Coruna in the early hours of Sunday morning. All buildings which are operated by Councils, eg museums, are closing at 12noon. The last time a hurricane hit the landscape was virtually flattened and they still have not cleared up all the trees. We had no electricity for 16 days - but they replaced all the electricity pylons so I am hoping they will withstand the wind. Also what trees were left standing have all be chopped down away from the pylons.

I learnt my lesson the last time by not taking the warning seriously and have today spent the time catching up on all my washing!

No. The hurricane season is June to November and they are tropical storms.

This is not a "proper" hurricane, it is just a very severe Atlantic storm with winds that may reach hurricane force, which is winds over 118km/hr

The UK shipping forecast for Biscay this morning was saying:-

"Mainly southerly 6 to gale 8, occasionally severe gale 9, becoming cyclonic severe gale 9 to violent storm 11, perhaps hurricane force 12 later."

They are also forecasting F12 in the other two Spanish sea areas, Fitzroy and Trafalgar.

From what I can see on the weather charts the worst affected place will be the coast of Southern Brittany.

Time to batten down the hatches!
