Default How much is a bottle of Abarino wine in your local shop?

Just trying to see the range of prices (and yes, I realise different wines from the same region will have a different value). I imagine that shops in Galicia would sell it cheaper, but let's see?

Edit - tut, spelling. Albariño

believe it or not, an interesting topic!!

9.90 euros - supermarket, canary islands.

OH suggested we buy a bottle the other day, then I see the price and said FO.

In Mallorca, we drank it regularly for about 6.50 euros.

On route from Sevilla to Santaigo, it cost IRO 5.50.
Once in Galicia, I think the price went up!!

There is a very decent Albarinyo you can get at Hipercor called Marquez de Vizhoja for a little over 4 euros.

Perhaps my favourite wine, but cheap it ain't! Tesco's used to do deals, and you could get it for around £4-4.50, but those days are long gone.

A Spanish friend of mine in London who was a wine buff said a 5 euro bottle of wine in Spain would cost £10 in a UK supermarket and £25 in a UK restaurant.

I'm talking about a Spanish wine of course. I also know English people who moan that there are not enough non-Spanish wines available in Spain. I dont know any Spanish person who would think for a second of drinking a wine that wasnt Spanish (in Spain). They just think foreign wines are inferior quality or have a higher price for the same quality.

I have a Catalan friend who would never drink champagne as he loves cava. He usually spends around 10-15 euros a bottle in the supermarket/bodega for a cava and says if this was champagne it would be 50 euros. I think Cava has a bad reputation among Brits because they are used to drinking the 2 euro versions that got exported to the UK.

Not always so! The better quality the wine the more likely it is to be cheaper in the UK. There are so many offers on now. Most good ribera del duero wines are cheaper. Cordoniu (sp) cheap cavas have been on offer last month and were the same price as alcampo. Vueve clicquot for me or nada!

Albariño is usually about €8 for a well known one.

Lidl do a reasonable one called Salneval for under €4.

Yes, totally!! It drives me nuts the way the OH will not even consider any wine that is not Spanish. Since I met him a non-Spanish wine hasn't even passed my lips once

Agree. I think to say a €5 bottle of wine in Spain would cost £10 in UK is a bit of a sweeping statement. The usual Spanish wines we buy do not seem anywhere near that much cheaper, at times I don't see a huge difference. If you shop around there are loads of deals about, many at 50% off. We know what we like, which is normally £9-£10 a bottle, but we never pay anywhere near that. We drink mainly Spanish, but also like some of the newer Chilean wines, and I don't think I'd like to confine myself to any one country.

Probably not as it is a wine that few Brits have heard of even though it is arguably one of the best Spanish wines.

What is exported from Spain bears little resemblance to what is available in Spain.

I always buy the annual Peñin guide to Spanish wines (all 1200 of them!) and if you look up the Spanish wines offered in the UK about 50% of them or less appear in the guide! They are clearly re-branded for export.

As for non Spanish wines in Spain -they are very difficult to find as the Spanish, quite reasonably, are parochial about their wines - just like the French.

The beauty of buying wine in the UK is that as they only have a limited production of UK wines the supermarkets have a huge choice of wines from around the world.

I particularly like New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc - it is virtually unobtainable here (it might be different in Madrid) so I have to persuade my friends who regularly drive down from the UK for the winter to bring me some!

El Corte Inglés has some good Australian reds and NZ whites but they are more expensive than in the UK. They had a good sauvignon from NZ around xmas called Fairhill cliffs. They never seem to have a lot of stock though, find one you like and they never stock it again

Yes, saying "albariño" is a bit like saying "Rioja", there´s a wide range of both, and a wide range of prices. Albariño will always be quite a bit more expensive in UK as it´s not imported in big numbers, a bit like wines imported into Spain. I find the difference in more popular, commercial wines is a lot less.
