That's a question I've not yet asked.....I may not like the answer! :(

At the moment what is keeping them afloat is the rent they get from a flat they own, fortunately it's on a long term rental agreement.
They are fortunate in that they own their house the flat and two shops outright, so at least even though things are bad have no outlay for those.

I may have posted this before but a friends family owned 2 shoe factories in Elche. When business slumped due to foreign imports they needed to close one factory although they had plenty of work for the other which was more specialised. All the staff had been there for years, they couldn't pay them and had to go bankrupt and close both:(

That is why there are so many short term contracts.

Yes I know what you mean, it's very expensive to pay long term staff off!
If it gets to that stage we will probably give them the money to do it as the money is more use to them now than when we are both dead!

I remember the serious trouble in Elche when the Chinese moved into the shoe distribution trade there. They either made or imported almost exact copies of the famous Elche shoes and sold them for a fraction of the price, putting Spanish manufacturers out of business.

The local people rioted and set fire to Chinese premises, but unfortunately someone died and there was a long police investigation. It must have been over ten years ago now.
