How to check legality of Spanish lawyer
 

Hello everyone,

We have just started a process of buying a property in Spain and choose a local lawyer (recommended by estate agent) who will have power of attorney from us.

I know that I should've check the lawyer before starting the process but it's better late than never.

Does anyone know when I can check if he is legally appointed or certified?

Just a "By the Way" there are several posts on this site which clearly recommend you do NOT buy a property through a lawyer recommended by the estate agent who sold you the property.

Some years ago I eventually had to sue a lawyer registered with the college of lawyers,although he was not Spanish I would add.I was not his client but was receiving money from a property sale by British people who quite rightly wanted to have everything correct.He was listed on the British Consulate list & hopefully was later deleted after I complained.So perhaps you are better getting a personal recommendation from someone who has dealt successfully with something similar.

My fault I haven't checked the forum first.

The link that you provided... I have absolutely no idea how to check my lawyer if he is registered or not. Wish I knew Spanish a bit

I wouldn't worry too much we did exactly the same thing, and the layers we were recommended were excellent, we even used them for wills etc. I suspect that if the Estate agent is reputable then they are unlikely to jeopardise their reputation by using an unscrupulous lawyer, still we would have acted differently if we had bought again.

I'm feeling hopeless. As I don't speak Spanish I can't find out if he is registered. I have called "Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Cartagena" as they are official body releasing licences for local lawyers but nobody wanted to speak in English :(

I never even thought to check my abogado's qualifications. Would you check a UK solicitor's qualifications?

I would be more concerned about giving anyone, whether they were qualified or not, PoA.

Have a look at the above it appears to match the name in your link.
Are you paying the lawyer directly for his services or is the agent?

OK so that did not work so well!

Put the first two names in the field marked nombre and second two names in field marked appellidos the put cartagena in the final field.

Well in UK I haven't check my solicitor but Spain is somithing new for me and I've read on forums about many scams.

I have gave a PoA as many people recommend it to speed up the process.

Perhaps not as common, but there are dishonest solicitors in the UK. Would you use a solicitor recommended by an EA in UK?

Many do it, but I would suggest you think very carefully before giving PoA, particularly to an Abogado who you seem to know very little about.

Buying in Spain can be very quick and easy. I would suggest easier & quicker than in England.
