I need to hire a car for Christmas in the UK but have been issued with a temporary certificate whilst the new licence is being processed. Hertz have turned around and said they can't accept it.

Two questions how long is it normally for a new one to be turned around and has anyone come across this problem before and what did they do_

had exactly this last year. Got an International Driving licence from Trafico to back up the piece of paper but when i got to the counter of the car hire company I gave them my expired Spanish licence and they just accepted it.
As for the new licence, it took more than 6 months as they wouldn't send it to my PO Box. They sent it to my official address which has no postal deliveries and I had to wait for 6 months (2 temporary certificates worth) for them to accept that the license would not be delivered. Took a further 6 weeks for it to be ready for me to pick up in person at Trafico.

I don't think any mainstream hirer in the UK will accept temp Spanish license.

I kept "old copy" of my old UK license whilst waiting for my Spanish one to be issued.

That was a while back and can't remember exactly how long, but it took a looooooooong time. I do recall the temporary license expired and had to be replaced before I got the proper Spanish one.

The last time I renewed my Spanish licence it arrived in less than two weeks.

Fingers crossed it does come through in two weeks but need a contingency plan. Someone suggested getting an International Driving Permit but can you get that immediately and I read you have to have a valid driving licence with it.

I have a photocopy of my old UK one but the original got sent back when I got my Spanish licence.

I anticipated slow Spanish service and got a duplicate before handing over my license. Not legal but ............

I have driving licenses from four countries

However only two of them are in date

Spoke to Hertz Internatiional licence not valid with out of date driving licence even though I have a certificate to say I can drive.

Just this evening I went to get my Spanish licence renewed. My current licence expires in about a month. After the medical the doc issued the temporary paper licence and handed back to me my 'old' license, said that it's not valid any longer but it wasn't cancelled in any physical way. I can see no reason why I shouldn't use this at any UK car hire whilst it still shows a future expiry date.

They said 2 to 3 weeks for the new license to arrive.
