help...nervous cats

we adopted 2 cats (approx 2 years old) after their owner died, we have had them since middle of May

At first, understandably, they were pretty nervous, however still now they will rarely come to us for a stroke

We kept them in for over a month in case they ran off, now they go out but only stay in our garden and hide in the bush if they see us coming...doesnt matter how quietly we approach them..seems like they hate us :(

anyone got any advice on how to make them a bit more accepting or could this just be their way now and we will never change them ?

it's probably just they way they are - but eventually they will probably accept you

it's only been a few months & they probably still miss their mum (or dad) - cats can get very attached to one person

one of our cats still doesn't much like dh - even after 17 years

the 3 year old adores him & isn't too keen on me - even though I always feed them:frown:

You should google "cat behaviour forum" or "pet behaviour forum". These forums tend to be inhabited by lots of worried owners like yourself, and also a bunch of professional animal behaviourists (or animal shrinks....whatever they call themselves). Although in most cases it is the owner, not the pet, that they end up training!

Have always been told that a cat adopts you not you adopts it, so the fact that they are still both their is something. I ended up with a semi ferral cat and everything was on his terms, pretty much like teenagers, so treat them like teenagers, plenty of space and be there when they want you. I know it sounds unfair but eventually they will come round.:)

Only kidding my sense of humor, couldn't resist.
We once had a couple of feral cats off a local farmer back in the UK and it did take very long time for them to fit in with the alpha cat but although one died of a very bad cold the other survived and is the most gentle cat you could ever meet.So soft and loves the family that looks after him.

All the best with them
