Help needed pleasel

Hello,

My husband and I have been talking for years about moving to Spain. We’ve finally decided to take the plunge and looking to move March/April 2024. We initially thought long term rent but decided now to buy outright. We’re not looking to work full time just simple little jobs 2 or 3 days a week. I’ve been constantly looking on the internet at places in Almeria, Alicante, Costa Blanca & Murcia , but to be honest we just don’t know where to begin! It’s only us moving with a small dog so any ideas would be much appreciated please. Ideally, we’re looking at areas 10-15 min walk to bar, restaurants & amenities etc near the beach or 15 min drive.
Thank you 😊

If you are UK passport holders then you cannot come to Spain and look for work.

You either find a Spanish employer willing to offer you a job and then sponsor you for a visa, or you come on the so called 'Non Lucrative Visa' which, as it's name infers, does not permit work of any kind.

There is a self employed visa but from what you've said probably not relevant.

As said above if you are UK national you will not be able to work unless someone has sponsored your work visa. Given that you are not looking for professional jobs it is very unlikely you will be able to work. You can come here with a non work visa but you would need to meet the financial requirements and unless you are near retirement age life might be a bit boring without any work

If you decide on the non lucrative visa You will both also need full private healthcare paid for a full year as part of your visa application.

Do you have UK passports?

If you are intending to buy but not sure where to buy then rental would definitely be the best bet so you can can get the feel for each area and what facilities and transport links are nearby, I presume you are aware of the driving licence problems currently ongoing.

If you have Irish parents or grandparents I believe that makes life easier but I have Heard so many conflicting things about it.

DL issues nearly resolved, visas are a bigger issue.

I can't think what conflicting things you could have heard. Having an EU passport makes moving to an EU state a million times easier, full stop.

If you are referring to eligibility for an Irish passport then yes, you must have an Irish parent or grandparent. Alternatively, you can move to Ireland and apply for naturalisation after five years of residency.

Needless to say, the Irish FBR and the Irish passport office have never been so busy with a massive backlog mostly consisting of UK nationals desperate for an EU passport and US nationals wanting to relocate to the EU.

For me that is one of the most important aspects. I was not in favour of moving to Spain, it was my husbands dream not mine, so I very reluctantly came over for a look. The agreement was that he would drop the idea if I did not like anywhere. I was happily rejecting places until we entered the town where I live, I have never been able to explain it but I immediately felt at home. Never regretted going with my gut feelings, never felt the urge to move even when I ended up living here alone.

Rosemary.
