Default help my mate, car insurance prob

my mate has an old alfa convertable, spyder i think,he paid about 6k for it he was a car dealer so i guess he knows that was ok,anyway about 6 months ago he was driving on the fuengirola paseo when some finnish bird whacked him up the arse(if you will pardon the expression)

she admitted fault so he thought no probs, assesor came garage said 4.5k to fix as chassis has been bent etc,her insurance company has offered just now 6 months later 450e,his broker keeps saying they get no response from emails, any ideas what he can do

after all it was not his fault and the woman says and has signed to say it was her fault,he gets no help from broker or garage

How awful, sorry I cannot be much help but I can sympathise.

I had an insurance problem with my 'cherished' car. 1990 Porsche 911. When I insured it here one of the questions was - the value. At the time it was 22K. However 3 years later I had a small engine fire whilst travelling therefore needed to make a claim. There was no one else involved. After 3 months my insurance company told me it was a 'write off' and I was offered 6800 euros.

Sadly the value is based on a table that starts with the original purchase price and shows a depreciation each year. (Similar to when you import a car and they calculate the tax to pay). There is no understanding of Classic cars. or high value cars here. I expect the same thing would happen if you were lucky enough to own a 20 year old Ferrarri - in the table it would probably be valued at 7K or something similarly stupid.

In my case the insurers (Ibex) had transported my car to the Porsche main dealer and asked for an estimate. It came back at 32K. This included absolutely everything under the back cover including a new engine!!! It even included a catalytic converter that was never there in the first place. I was also charged for storage!!! I argued the point until I gave up and accepted.

I did get my car repaired. I transported it back to UK to a Porsche specialist (not a dealer). The engine was fine as were most other large parts. Most of the problem was the electrics and a bit of bodywork. I ended up out of pocket but still have my car.

I changed my insurance company, but know that if there are any future claims I will probably have the same problem again. If anyone knows of a company that will insure a car for it's market value please let me know.

I have no personal experience but we do get loads of clients coming into the office with similar problems. Any insurance in Spain just does not seem to compare with that in England. We have no response to letters, e-mails, telephone calls etc etc, files lost!!

He ought to claim on his insurance and let them argue the toss with the blonde bimbo's insurer.

With older classic cars it can be very difficult to assess the true market value. It is prudent to have an agreed value on the policy

I guess the value of a "classic" car in the UK aint what it will be valued at here. I have a 14 year old car I imported from the UK, with which I've taken the view that if I have an accident in it, my fault or others, it will just be written off sadly, especially as they would only allow me to insure it third party!

Sensationalfrog - when I was arguing with Ibex over the months, they never once came up with anything other than their original offer. It was as though they were just dragging the whole process out as long as possible. At one point they asked me to send details of similar cars 'for sale' in Spain, which I did. It was very hard to find any of the same year and model, but I found two on www.autocasion.com, both for in excess of 25K - but they still insisted mine was worth no more than 6800.

So I do wish your friend luck, it makes you wonder why the companies ask you to put a value on your car when they are working out the annual premium to pay. Plus I have the feeling that cars are not so important to the spanish people, after all you can just go out and buy another one!

This is true and at the end of the day they are just a means of transport with no more value than their use which is a shame because I'm also a great fan of classic cars but it would seem they are a worhtless objet d'art to the insurance companies.

yeh mitzy they would only allow him to insure it 3rd party

jontee,he is now thinking of paying for the repairs himself, maybe 3k if lucky and selling car after,in the meantime taking the other insurers to court

after all the accident was not his fault and basically as it stands he is 6k out of pocket, its wrong but there

ty for replies
