Default Help me with my Spanish pleeease.

Anyone know the Spanish word for free diving? You know, when those nutters hold their breath for about 5 minutes and go about 100 metres under the sea - but without the diving equipment.

I believe the Spanish word sounds something a little like acne(!), but I can´t find it in any of my dictionaries.

Cheers!

Ah ha! Apnea was the one I was after. It does sound a little bit like acne after all!

Thanks for that.

Think I will stick to normal diving, as in Scuba.

Don't know the spanish word but the activity you are referring to is called
'Base Jumping' typical american phraseology!! as you always fall to base, dead or alive, the NUTTERS!!!!!!! In america it is quite common for Base Jumpers to dodge security guards and jump off high buildings with the guards in pursuit, well at least until they jump!!!

No, not base jumping - I meant the underwater stuff.

No, not thinking of taking it up. It´s just that as the word crops up in conversation all the time I thought it would be useful to know.

Blimey! I think I can honestly say that free diving has never cropped up in any conversation in Spanish I've ever had!

never heard anyone in Spain call it apnea, in fact i jut looked it up:

apnea:
. a temporary suspension of breathing, occurring in some newborns (infant apnea) and in some adults during sleep (sleep apnea).

i guess you dont breath underwater, makes sense.... sorry i am on the rum, so maybe not making sense, england drives me to the booze .

Buceo de pulmon libre sounds right. Apnoea is all wrong. In Spanish they talk about Sueno de Apnea which is what we know as Sleep Apnoea... a subject I happen to be a vociferous expert on and I happen to be a diver, so...

What interests me more is what class of conversation you're having where 'free diving' crops up with worrying regularity...do tell!

Well, I may have exaggerated the frequency a little bit!

I actually don´t remember the conversation that surrounded the buceo now, but I was in a restaurant and someone was insisting that the word was acnia, or acnea or something like that and I was trying to find out what word they were trying to say.

The other word we got stuck on (although I managed to find it later in dictionary) was istmo, which in English is isthmus.

I realise now that this was possible the most boring table talk in a restaurant ever!
