Help for aged parents
 

Hi,

Does anyone know if it is possible to get any help from Social services in Spain, in particular, help with an Alcoholic parent that is now becoming a danger to himself and those around him. My parents live near to Antiquera and I have been told that as I do not live in Spain there is nothing I can do to help them. I would be very grateful to know if there is anyone that has experienced using the social services, in particular with a serious problem such as this or if there is a way that my father can be placed in rehabilitation as my mother can no longer cope with him.

I can't specifically help, I'm not in that area, but if you or your mother contact Age Concern España http://acespana.org/ they should be able to point you in the right direction

You can't force sufferers to go into rehabilitation, but this organisation can help those affected by the principals:

I agree with HBG: getting someone to change their drinking habits has to be voluntary and I hope you'll be aware that depriving someone who is physically dependent on alcohol, without medical intervention, can be dangerous.

If your father is willing to tackle his drinking behaviour he will need the support of a doctor and s/he could be your first port of call.

I'm sure AlAnon would be helpful in providing more information.
