Hi

We are new to this site and are looking for any help and advice you can give us in the next few months as we lead up to moving to Spain in March next year.

All being well I will be starting a new job in Gibraltar and my partner will be looking for work. We have read other threads etc and have taken on board about NOT residing in La Linea.

We would really be grateful of any advice you could give us re:

where to live which is not too far to commute to Gibraltar
Recommendation and tips regarding finding a short term rental (initially)
where and how to look for work
Opening bank accounts
applying for NIE cards

Just any general tips you could give us would be very much appreciated.

Many thank for the welcome. We are really new to all of this (Forums, Threads etc) as well as making the decision to move to Spain. A little scary but exciting and hopefully members will be able to advise and reassure us lol.

G'day Lindsey, I went to Gib on a regular basis and found the easiest method was by bus. Check out the bus routes along the coast and you will find that they go thru lots of small towns were there are reasonable rentals. I lived in Puerto de la Duquesa which is way down the coast which was about an hour each way (bus along the A7, walk thru border checkpoint, bus into centre of town)

Guadiaro not a bad place to look, reasonable infrastructure and not so far to commute.
The NIE you get from the police and you will need it if you want to open a Spanish resident's bank account. You can also apply at the police station for a Residence certificate, a "Green Card" which shows your NIE and your address.
As it is your first time with all these procedures probably worthwhile looking for a "Gestoria" - general fix-it type organisation, they will charge a small fee to process your documents and even help you get priority service at the police station ( if they are any good ) otherwise you face a long wait in a queue.
look for rentals on sites like Idealista.com, they have an english version

Hey Fluffer thank you so much for your advice :) we are coming over in Feb to look at nearby areas and will take a bus ride as you suggested.
Is it difficult to find work once out there? Any tips or advice?

Yes you will need to actually meet them as not all of them deal with such documentation, many specialise in tax, labour and accounting.

Have a look at this San Roque guide ( the administrative centre for the area ), page 84 lists everything you need to do

When you get over here go to ayuntamiento ( town hall ) for padron certificate and police for NIE. We only just got our residencia this year and it entailed 3 trips to Seville, gestors cost for house documents, and translation costs for income documents, plus Health card from Ossuna via Washington (UK) and Seville, which they contrived to lose so we needed to do it twice,. So residencia is not easy, every place seams to have different rules, and these vary from person to person. There was another thread about residencia some time ago and it was posted that Spain had suspended residencia applications from UK citizens until brexit had been sorted out, but I am sure somebody can update you on that.

Spanish bureaucracy is usually pedantic, tedious, and unavoidable. as the saying goes " Red tape is strictly non elastic" Patience is the key.
Rule 1: Never try to short circuit the system
Rule 2: See rule 1

The rewards of living over here, do outweigh the hassle, so perseverence is the key, unless of course you have long pockets, in which case a good abogado will do the job for you.

That's the extranjaria which is usually (but not always) with the NATIONAL police station.
