As a tourist you will have to use your EHIC. Private health insurance does not cover prescriptions.
Husband is in receipt of state pension. Has EHIC from Ireland. No Private health insurance. Property owner in Spain but not yet resident. Intends to spend 60 or 70 days in Spain this year. We understand to go to emergency dept of nearest Public hospital (Alicante) if an emergency arrives and cost is covered by EHIC. But if just feeling unwell or requires doctor assessment where do you access health care in that case?

You visit a doctor or a clinic. For minor ailments advice is available from any Farmacia

Thank you for reply. Do you just walk into clinic or GP? No registration? Produce EHIC?

Remember that in a no deal Brexit EVERYTHING stops dead overnight (EHIC's included) and cannot and will not be reinstated beit in the same or miodified form until negotiations have taken place and agreements reached and that could take w} peeks or months.

EU citizens in UK will be largely unaffected as NHS health care is based purely on legal residency, no S1's for them.

With the caveat that the Spanish Government have already published what they will do in the case of a no deal ...

I did read somewhere that Spain are willing honour commitment to Brits irrespective of any agreement. It is only Boris and Co who seem determined to make a drama out of a crisis.

Yes they have agreed this but subject to a similar deal unilaterally with the UK. I think we can safely assume that Gov.uk will agree to that

What's not to agree to, as said entitlement to NHS care in UK is based on legal residency, nothing more and nothing less.

To imagine or suggest that post Brexit they would actively seek to create some sort of pseudo half baked residency for EU citizens requiring of them some sort of additional qualification would be nothing but wild speculation and scaremongering.

BTW there is a 3rd class of S1 and that is for those living in - or with immediate family living in - the EU but still working in UK and paying tax and NI there. It's euphemistically termed a 'workers' S1 but has the same effect as any other the actual differences being that is issued by HMRC not DWP and that it lasts for just one year but provided its a holder remains employed and paying NI is indefinitely renewable on it's anniversary.

If required, i.e. holder packs up work but is still under state retirement age, it used to be followed for up to 18 months by a residual S1 however that was done away with in 2014.
