Default Health Care for the Elderly

Can anyone advise on what the situation is regarding health care for the elderly in Spain, specifically Andalucia.
We know post retirement age of one person the other is also entitled to "free" health care. We are thinking more of the very old.
What we are interested to find out is the sort of case were for example one was disabled by a stroke and left dependant on the other for most of lifes necessities. Can you get home assistance as in the UK?
We are a long way from retirement, so no need to rush, but we are trying to think through every possible scenario.

That is one of the deficiencies in the Spanish system (from the ex-pat point of view)

The Spanish expect to look after their elderly family members, unlike the UK where the concept of "Family" disappeared some time ago.

As a result there are relatively few "old peoples homes" in Spain. There are a few cropping up now, aimed at the ex-pat market, as there is obviously a huge potential market for such facilities.

Hopefully the situation will improve over time. If someone is looking for a serious business opportunity in Spain then this must be a good area to concentrate on.

Hi, you don't say what part of Andalucia, but a friend of mine who lives in Benalmadena Costa is a carer and works for a care agency

We guessed that it would be the case - families helping their own.

For info we are based in Almeria province towards the Murcia boarder.

Like Fred says a good business oppourtunity, but I guess high start up costs.
