Health card chip
Just an answer to questions on the ID card thread.
It is just the card issued by Junta de Andalucia here, the doctor puts on your prescription and you call in any ,Farmacia and they scan it and give you the medications , mine lasts for year.

It's a great system and saves patients and doctors a huge amount of time.
The chip has been on the card for some time - it wasn't put on there just for the prescription service. Maybe it can have other uses but I don't know of any at present.
The other service that Andalucia introduced is online booking of appointments. You can also go online to change personal details and also change your doctor.
I would be interested to know how many other regions have the same systems.

When I went in for a Hernia op, and saw the aneathiatist (sp) prior she scanned it and I assume put all the test results on it, everytime I go to the clinic or the hospital they scan it, but you still get masses of paperwork with everybodies name and number on and what the procedures were.
I don`t think you could just have a holiday op here any more.

They probably scan it to see what drugs you are taking.
I seem to be collecting CDs with various scans on them, ultrasound, MRI etc. They don't play very well in the car though.

That is another question I get asked every time, also what allergies do you have, but I still ended up with a fish meal despite being alergic to fish.

I was told that if you lived in say Nerja and took ill in Ronda, the local GP would be able to look up your records. Never had to try it but sounds great.

Our cards are different in Asturias.
They have a magnetic strip (no chip). You can book appointments online etc too.
It is a great system

Have you tried that though? The Spanish obsession with having a piece of paper to achieve anything seems to go against that process. The last time my OH booked using their central phone appointment service we had all manner of issues when we got to the doctors and ended up waiting until everyone with a bit of paper had been seen first - we book the appointments in person now

My OH books appointments online and it works fine but for some reason the system won't accept mine. Mentioned it at the health centre and got the usual shrug

Re: Health card chip
I have used it many times with no problems. I have also never had to wait more than 10 minutes to see the doctor when I arrived on time.
I also changed my doctor online.

Re: Health card chip
My arrangement to collect my prescription from the farmacia ran out a week ago. The stand-in doctor, needed all the info of what I needed from me to be able to reinstate the 'order.' She of course had my card as she had to 'key' it in.

Our doctor has kept up with all of the information regarding Graham via the computer so we have not had to tell her anything. I noticed that everyone in the surgery is at the moment having their cards changed to the new chip ones that we have.

Re: Health card chip
That's interesting, so I am even more surprised my GP uses the information I take her from the specialist to up date my medical history. (I have a chipped card).
