A London council is to help families get on the housing ladder by offering tenants and first-time buyers £50,000 deposits.
Wandsworth councillors will discuss plans to set up a special "deposit fund" to help low-income families.
Last month the new leader of the council promised to lead a "radical reform" of housing in the borough.
Councillor Ravi Govindia compared the deposits plan to Right to Buy pioneered by Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s.

I can half see their logic, as it may encourage tenants on housing benefit to move out of social housing, get a job (if one's available) and become property owners. But what a kick in the teeth for people who've struggled for years to save up a deposit to get on the property ladder!

any one who has to return to the uk please note that Wandsworth is the place to end up with your old Lidl shopping bags full of personal belongings.

What is the problem with this if the money is ring fenced?

Re: Has the UK gone totally insane?
I think the problem is "helping out" people who haven't struggled/saved to get a deposit themselves, and who have the benefit of living in subsidized social housing. I'm not an opponent of social housing (rather the reverse) but I don't see why those fortunate enough to be in that situation, should then have an additional 50k helping hand from tax payers. Yes, I realise that some first time house buyers have had family help, but a lot of FTB'ers have struggled really hard to save up and get on the ladder. Now the council wants to keep prices high (for future FTBs who aren't in subsidized social housing) by handing out 50k deposits to those who haven't had that struggle. It sends all the wrong messages.
