There was a programme about this on channel 4 many years ago. They analysed all kinds of bottled water.

Among the results were; if the water companies tried to deliver it to you through pipes they would be sued, one bottled water from the Czech Republic contained a measurable amount of weapons grade plutonium, Highland Spring was full of fertilizer, nearly all of them contained bacteria and the only acceptable one was bottled from a tap in Manchester.

And a batch of Perrier contained Benzene.

Only mugs buy bottled water.

I don't think there is much choice if you live in somewhere like Valencia. Here in London the tap water often tastes foul, although we try to temper the taste by keeping it chilled. I've not bought the "still water" which is really bottled tap water from Yorkshire, but I can't blame those who do. And I do get some spring water in from time to time. I can't say I've died yet!

It's been going on for a long long time, MOST bottled water is from a mains supply, they filter it(in some cases) and call it 'purified' lol

In fact what's worse is a lot of the companies add SALT.

Recent allegations against the Coca-Cola Company and its brand name of bottled water, Dasani, have publicly highlighted one of the biggest misconceptions about the quality of bottled water. Coca-Cola, advertising its bottled water as “pure, still water,” is now being investigated for misleading consumers about the true nature of the contents of its bottles. Rather than deriving its water from natural springs, Coca-Cola had actually been filling its Dasani bottles with purified tap water.

Of course, this problem of reconstituted tap water in Dasani bottles would not be so large if it was an isolated incident. Unfortunately, the process of bottling tap water is not limited to the Coca-Cola Company. In 1999, the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) published the results of a four-year study in which researchers tested more than 1,000 samples of 103 brands of bottled water. These researchers found that,

“An estimated 25 percent or more of bottled water is really just tap water in a bottle—sometimes further treated, sometimes not.”

In one case, a brand of bottled water, advertised as “pure, glacier water,” was found to be taken from a municipal water supply while another brand, flaunted as “spring water,” was pumped from a water source next to a hazardous waste dumping site. While “purified tap water” is arguably safer and purer than untreated tap water (depending upon the purification methods), a consumer should expect to receive something more than reconstituted tap water for the exceptional prices of bottled water.

we have a natural spring here in Estepa. It's still running despite the dry weather so that is where we get our "bottled" water.... and it's free. Never quite worked out why the local town hall does not bottle it themselves and make some cash out of it for the town.

There was a spring in the campo behind Marbella and locals used to queue to fill containers. About 10 yrs ago it was found to be contaminated with pesticides because of run off from the fields. A small pueblo outside Marbella, Istán still has the old springs gushing out in the main square and it is very good.

We were in a restaurant in Tunisia and when I passed by the kitchen entrance saw them filling the small water bottles from the tap

Its hardly surprising they do it, the family own a spring and bore hole on the Downs (I have a VERY eclectic family) and the hoops you have to jump through just to get it to the bottling stage is phenomenal, we ended up just capping it and walking away from it.

Lots of fresh Spring water freely available throughout the Valencia area for those who can be bothered to collect it.

I have a nice private Spring supply in Sweden also, though it went a tad sour for a while when some nearby forestry land was badly disturbed.

There are two excellent Spring supplies on my place in the UK which I thought about bottling, but had second thoughts because of the hassle and expense involved.

Have to agree with you about London water, but what do you expect after its been around the sewerage systems umpteen times ?

I don't see how someone living in the city can justify a 45 minute drive out and back (perhaps spending 5 euros or more petrol??) when they can just buy a container of spring water at the local shop for 1 euro 50 or so?

I always drink tap water. Apart from the bottled water minerals con, there is the problem of all those billions of plastic bottles to dispose of.

If friends come from the UK and are iffy about drinking the water here, I bring out a bottle from the fridge which is actually just iced tapwater. They are none the wiser!
