That is terrible. The guy who installed my Smart DNS said he worked for Alternativa and that they are getting 10. Might be an idea to have a chat to them. I can give you his mobile if you want to have a chat.

La Alternativa use a Wimax system over the airwaves; movistar use copper wires from poles or sometimes underground. If you use copper wires, then the distance from the distribution point has a bearing on the speed you can get.

Wimax we had with aeromax was set at 2Mb, but we could have had 6 or more if we wanted. I was interrupted by bad weather from time to time unfortunately

Agreed. Wimax works well most of the time. It is not as reliable as a landline but certainly cheaper.

very true, as telephone cable is always thin, and the system is designed to carry telephonic voice (in the UK using 50v supply) on an audio frequency to about 3,500hz it is all old technology. But the thin wires also have high resistance, this gets worse the further you are from the source sub-box.
the higher the resistance the harder it is for the signal to get through so the speed drops.
simples !!

the only thing that is "new" is that under the more relaxed rules than those of only a few years ago, the "newcomers" can install their boxes inside the exchanges of Movistar - but once it leaves there it is back to old copper.

sri its technical, but that is what it is all down to, it doesn't matter a jot how much you have spent on the kit in the house and what you are promised by some guy down the road - its all down to copper cable and basic physics and the distance you are from the last repeater.

Can I add that it doesn´t matter which company you swap to for your internet/phone (unless they are going to put their own cables in), as the cable is the same, you can´t get a faster speed no matter what they say.

If Telefonica can´t get it faster / better, then neither can they

totally agree Dave, that is why in some areas co's like ONO can win hands down with their owned fibre, in the same way as Virgin in the UK.
But it COSTS to build an infrastructure.

All ITV, Channel 4, including Film 4, plus TCM have gone overnight. However, TCM+1 still works.

Nearly right - it's not about "thin wires" and resistance, and repeaters aren't involved. The bandwidth you get at any site is really down to signal loss. The main factors here are (1) the ADSL signal is attenuated the farther you get from the telephone exchange, (2) the 'copper pair' from the exchange to your premises could be made up of various cable sections with different diameters (eg 0.5mm, 0.6mm) which have diverse loss characteristics and it might not all be copper – there could be some aluminium (world copper prices rocketed in the 80s and 90s and cheaper aluminium was fine for voice) which has a much higher loss than copper. Another thing that can affect the bandwidth is outside interference (technically called REIN) from street lights, faulty A/C or fridge thermostats, faulty transformers in domestic devices, fluorescent light fittings, flashing or sequence lights, faulty light and dimmer switches, nearby use of heavy electrical equipment eg generators, welders, electric motors.

We find WIMAX to be about 1000% more reliable than a landline. Our landline internet at home died every day for some period of time.

In all fairness, we live in the campo, but the landline internet in our office in Palma died as often as once per week for an hour or so. Still, I would expect there must be some landlines in city centers that are reliable.

Yet, we haven't had those problems with WIMAX so far...

Also, I find WIMAX as the only "alternative" that is suitable for VoIP telephony. 3G, 4G and satellite have up to 1 second latency, and you can't carry on a conversation that way.

I realise it needs an antenna and permissions will be needed for that for non-villa owners. Which is a drag.....

..... But its pricing is good, the speed should be enough to get TV, even HD, its unlimited and great for us personally, as you are not tied to a contract yearly, meaning for non full time residents, one can 'switch it off' and then re-engage when you are there.. a kind of Pay as you go (sort of) model.

If this works half as good as the ads, and we can get reception in CE, it may be the best option for many people, us included.. to get TV, and do other stuff. For us (personally) non-heavy users, if we can stream TV without problems then its all we need to do other stuff we need to do online - kind of like a benchmark for us.

The TMN 3G dongle is so far the best non-permanent use internet Ive seen in Europe, and works for us - but BB4S sounds like it may be even better... IF we can get the signal (+permissions etc) - and it actually works in this corner of Spain
