I wouldn't have believed this if I didn't know the person involved personally. My friends brother has a house near Altea which they visit occasionally from the U.K. Recently they came out for a couple of weeks - unfortunately he had a heart attack and is still in intensive care (but making progress..). As usual he hired a car from Benidorm. My friend phoned the company to explain what had happened and arrange for them to collect the hire car - expecting sympathy and a speedy response.

What he got left him speechless - they said "no we can't collect the car and if you don't return it we'll send a grua and charge you 100 euros extra" . For anyone who doesn't know the area - Altea to Benidorm is about 10km! Then they suggested that he should drive the car - they agreed that he wouldn't be insured but said "well it's not far to Benidorm......" The conversation ended there. When his brother's wife came back from the hospital later that day, the car had gone, presumably collected. So, O.K., they gave in in the end but what a way to treat a customer, especially at a time when they are so worried about a sick relative.

This is the same company that ripped off my son by charging him 60 euros for a compulsory (45 litre) full tank of petrol for a 4 day hire.
