Default Gibraltar: Medical Facilities

Hello. I was hoping to get a better idea of what the medical facilities are like in Gibraltar. My husband has been offered a job and we will be moving within a few months. I am a little nervous because I am pregnant (high risk) and was wondering what the maternity section/ Obgyn is like in the main hospital. If anyone has any experience of pregancy and delivery in Gibraltar please respond. Thank you!

Hi MMigo,
Welcome to BE I am sure that with all of the knowledgeable people here you will receive answers to your questions. At the top of the page you will find a thread called free beer, this contains a lot of useful information that could help you.
The moderators for the Spanish forum are Mitzyboy and Fred James any problems or complaints should be directed to them.
I believe that there are quite a few members who work or have worked in Gib and in the past they have always been very helpful. In Spain the medical facilities are excellent so I would be surprised if Gib was any different. It is late here so it will probably be morning before you receive a reply.
I wish you the best of luck with your pregnancy.
We are the concierges for the Spanish forum so please let us know if you require help at any time.

Graham and Rosemary.

You should really contact your husbands company and ask them the actual cover he will get for the family and go from there.
Gib and Spain are different countries and have different health systems, if you live in Gib you would only be covered in Gib and if in Spain only for emergency treatment with your EHIC if you have one.

Graham and Rosemary.
Thank you for you warm welcome and for your reply. Im hoping the facilities will be excellent. Im aware of only the main hospital in Gibraltar for maternity so I dont really have much choice in healthcare (as im pretty sure we wont be going to Spain). I guess we will only really know once we experience it first hand!

Oh yes, your right. If they provide some sort of cover that would be good to have. Im pretty sure though that we will just be receiving the public healthcare thats available in Gib. Im not sure what an EHIC is.

The EHIC stands for "Emergency Health Insurance Card" and is for people who are normally resident in one country but need cover when abroad on holiday.

So if you are normally resident in UK, it would cover you whilst on holiday in Gibraltar.

I think you really should look at some of the specialist sites dedicated to moving abroad and what you should do before moving - this will then give you some idea of what to expect (like getting EHIC cards, what to do about vehicles etc.)

Try UKinspain for a start but there might be something more specific to Gib (like UKinGib).

best of luck.

The Gibraltar Health Authority / St Bernards Hospital offer very good modern facilities to people who are resident in Gibraltar. There is also some cover for those who work in Gib but are resident in Spain.

I have first hand knowledge of their abilities and find them very satisfactory, however I have never had need for maternity care

In the few areas where facilities may be lacking then Gibraltar contracts the work out to Spain or UK, however I don't think this affects maternity.

Thats good to know! Im getting bits of information here and there, so far everything has been positive. Which is a big relief. I just hope registration will be speedy as I will want to see and speak to a Dr. asap once we arrive. Perhaps I could even register beforehand.
Thanks for your help.
