Gibraltar IT
Hello folks, tired of life in England and was thinking of moving to Gibraltar. I visited a couple of years ago and found it very nice... I know a lot of gambling websites run from there and need to get a job in IT.
Anyone live/work there, what are the chances of finding work there in this area? And also can you tell me about your experience of Gibraltar.
Thanks,
Andrew

Welcome to the site. I hope you enjoy using the forum. We have some really fab members here who I am sure you will enjoy interacting with. What I am going to do is move this to the Spain forum. I know that technically Gibraltar is not really Spain, but you will find that you will get more responses to your questions there.
You could also try using the search function, as I am sure if you type in "Gibraltar" it will pull up lots of threads for you to start wading your way through"
In the meantime if you have any questions about the site, please stop by Site Feedback and leave us a message. You will also find lots of info in the FAQ's.

Like Sue said do a search, there have been quite a few threads on Gib before, but as it is not Spain check in the Siesta Time forum also as they may be in there.

Re: Gibraltar IT
I´m going there for a visit next week, so I´ll post my findings, altho it does have a reputation for not being particularly pretty, clean or pleasant, until you see these things for yourself you dont know!!
On the work front, well the recession is global, I know theres a high precentage of bankers in Gib who have lost jobs. But I dont know anymore than that. You could try applying on line with some of these gambling establishments and see what happens???

Re: Gibraltar IT
Hi Andrew, there is another Andrew who from memory ended up working in Gib, I think... do a search for "Onlineamiga" and I am pretty sure he was something to do with IT as well. His trails and tribulations will keep you busy for a while I'm sure, but he is really happy and his last update was very positive.
Best of luck.

@jojo: I have been before and found it very clean and tidy. Nothing like your town centre in England thats for sure. The telephone boxes had every pane of glass too... so you can see... haha
@rugby: I will be sure to chase this guy down and interrogate. Thanks!

Re: Gibraltar IT
This exact topic has been done to death really, so try and find them in a search as it will give you a good idea.
In a nutshell though, IT jobs like every other sector here, are few and far between at the moment. Jobs are getting cut, and most positions are being filled internally.
If you are a specialist (like DBA) then you may get lucky, but any general 1st/2nd line support roles, development etc you will struggle.
As for Gibraltar, well I will just say for a holiday, or a passing visit, its not too bad. But for living, you quickly realise it is a complete dump! It's dirty, full of pikeys, tacky and frustrating (not least the jobsworth Police). Oh, and the phone boxes only have glass until they are smashed again

Re: Gibraltar IT
I went to Gibraltar today?? apart from the crossing which was horrendous, I found it wonderful. The main street and the square were beautiful, great bars, restaurants, shops, prices really cheap.... There were some parts that were tatty, but thats the case everywhere in Spain and it was no more shabby than anywhere else I`ve seen

Web Design/Development
Desktop Support Technician
Anything that isn't high profile like manager because I will be just starting a career out of college/university...
But honestly though I don't mind working in a call centre until something of real interest comes along...

Hi Andrew,
Having worked in Support/SEO for 20 years I moved here to get away from IT but somehow reluctantly found myself back doing it again. I'm based on the CDS but think it's still relevant so I'm going to have a go answering both your posts in one!
IT
Market over here is seemingly swamped with wananbe IT Support people with little to no experience or used to be a plumber/builder/baker/whatever and so started to subscribe to Computer Nerd Weekly in order to facilitate a career change. You wouldn't believe the disasters that I've had to clear up with real basic errors that have been caused by these so called IT Specialists. My experience of working with Web Developers/Designers here is that the vast majority really don't seem to have a clue (we've used loads in the past and finding anyone that can actually design and develop rather than just rip something off is almost impossible - again I wonder if most have just read a Dummies Guide to Frontpage/MS Paint book. The Gib market appears to mainly focus on high-end developers with experience of cutting edge techniques in the gambling/adult sector. SEO is a funky new buzzword anywhere and your average Joe seems to be jumping on that bandwagon too, so you will often see SEO job requirements (that pay awful and last 5 minutes as the company won't last long if it only employs people that have just recently read a book on SEO)
Agencies
I can only comment on the CDS but I've dealt with RecruitSpain and found them similarly unhelpful as has been mentioned before. I've also used the other large recruitment company down here (also with a Gib division) and when I was in the UK they seemed to be quite helpful with a large amount of jobs but although they told me I'd be an ideal candidate for almost all their IT roles I was told I would need to be in Spain before they could help me - which is fair enough. I moved to Spain and then 12 months after being here I dropped them an email saying I'd moved here and did they have anything... no answer, called them repeatedly.. no answer, checked their website and all the jobs that I saw 12 months previously were still being advertised (in fact I think that almost 3 years later the same jobs were on the site). Having dealt with agencies in London for years and years I don't think they're any different here and I do know of people that have secured jobs through agencies down here (although they never seem to be quite the deal they're made out to be!)
Good luck if you decide to do it though, it's a tough market out there at the moment!

I understand these are big in Gib and southern Spain:

No idea as to how good they are though.
